Hi,

If have a problem with the little light in the dash of the S3; normally when then alarm is turned on you can see the light come up every 5 seconds or so and when the immobiliser is turned off every 15 seconds; the light of my S3 does not work anymore....and if I am correct it is a led light and the bike is from 03-2006 thus that can't be the problem .......anyone any idea???

LEDs can burn out due to too high amperage or other problems.

The alarm connector pins 10+11 are connected to the LED, so you can check the alarm with a multimeter first that it is actually outputting some juice to these.

If yes, then you have a burned out LED or a faulty connection between the alarm connector and LED. Best check the connectors for corrosion.

You can also try to feed some juice to the alarm connector LED pins directly to see if it is OK. Use an inline resistor of R560 or R680 ohms on yer test wire so you do not burn the LED out while testing. The positive and negative count, the LED will only light up with the test wires the right way around. And just test that the LED lights up, do not feed a constant current to it for too long.

Hi Martin, which connector do you mean? the one by the alarm (does not have any numbers) or the one at the dashboard?

Check under the top triple clamp where it is mounted. I'm willing to bet the wires broke.

I was talking about the connector under the saddle. Do not know the pin layout of the one in the gauge cluster.

If your connector is lacking the numbers, have a looksee here:

Hi Martin,

Thanks again, I also found the numbers your were referring to; 11 nothing at all; 10 is the negative pole ( I checked with a wire between the battery plus and 10) so I think it is not the led!

Sorry, you think 10+11 pins are not the LED or you think the LED is not the problem because the alarm is not outputting anything to pins 10+11?

The pins are right for sure as I built my own alarm out of some stuff I had lying around and I am using the said pins for blinking the dashboard LED. Checked from the wire diagram: alarm connector pin 11 goes to pin 6 on instruments and pin 7 from dash comes back to pin 10. So you could test the LED directly from the dash pins 6+7 also.

If I am reading the diagram right 11 (or 6) is positive and 10 (or 7) is negative. This is the only way current will flow as a LED is a diode, it will only let current pass one way.

Note: Do not feed the 12-14 volts to these pins directly from the battery without the inline resistor or you could fry the LED.

I mean that I think the led is not the problem and as you write 11 has to be positive and I am getting nothing on 11...may be it is in the alarm itself? I am using a simple device with a light which goes on if you connect negative and positive (I do not know what its called!) Thanks for the advice...I see you are an expert in electricity...I am not

i am just thing...the device I am using is with a normal light...the output of 11 could be to weak to burn a normal light.....may be try with a loose led....

The loose LED will work. A standard red one is pretty much identical to the stock one on the dash.

One thing I forgot to mention: you should do your testing (from the wire side of the connector) with the alarm plug connected. The alarm probably gets it's power through the same connector. So testing with the plug unplugged you will get no result as the alarm does not get any power it could pass on to the pin 11.

Sounds very similar to 2 other 1050 S3's that I know of, both were '05 models and both had new instruments on warranty as there was apparantly an 'issue' with the alarm led on early models. If the led has failed then it will be covered by the warranty and as it is not a seperate item it will mean changing the instrument assembly.

Haven't had the time to call 'm. Try tomorrow.

Exhaust project is still in progress.
