Last October I stopped at the Corbin factory in Hollister CA. for an appointment to have a seat made while I waited. It was the morning of day 7 of an 8-day 1400 mile ride that took me from home here in So. Cal. to the High Sierras and across the valley to the coast and finally down SR-1 through Big Sur and home.

I knew I had posted photos of my visit to Corbin somewhere, but after an extensive search I'm convinced that it wasn't in the Triumph RAT forum where I could refer to them during discussions about motorcycle seats, so here goes:

BTW, appointments are required for ride-ins at the Corbin factory, especially on weekends. I decided to include this stop in my ride itinerary just a couple of days before I left and the only reason they were able to work me into their schedule is they had a cancellation. What they told me is weekend appointments usually need to be made a couple months ahead of time and weekday appointments need to be made 3-4 weeks ahead.

Hmmmm... This forum doesn't let me add any descriptions to the photos so I'll have to do it here:

The seat was custom-fitted to my ass before the covering went on. The guy worked the foam until it fit just right. The biggest difference from an off-the-shelf seat was they moved the seating position forward about 1.5 inches and lowered the seating height about an inch. Then the leather was cut and stitched to my specification and put on the foam.

All told, it took about 3.5 hours from when I rode in the door until I rode out with my new seat on. There's a really neat cafe right in the building where I had breakfast and coffee while I waited and there's a whole bunch of neat photos and memorabilia in the cafe and showroom to look at, so the wait actually went by very quickly.

By the way, the cafe is open to anyone whether you're a customer or not and it's a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch if you happen to be in the Hollister area.

Looks like you were well looked after :welldone , certainly better than buying a generic custom seat off the net and having to get the bloody thing reshaped anyway.

Yeah, the seat (uncovered) went on the bike, I'd sit on it, and tell the shaper what I liked and didn't like, and he'd take it back to his work station and do his magic. That happened at least 4 times and he didn't seem to mind at all. He genuinely wanted to get it just right—and he did.

I actually started feeling a little guilty for tying him up for as long as I did, but he assured me that most customers take a lot longer to please.

Californ-eye-eh? is a little far for me - but I just ordered the same seat (different stitch) from the Canadian Corbin distributer.

I know that I (and my butt) will be glad I did.

Do you have a report on the comfort and appearance of the seat after the break in period?

I am interested in doing this same thing, and it would be nice to hear what you have to say after almost a year of riding on this seat.

Is it a great improvement over the stock?

Lucky you PGR - glad you got the personalized treatment!

I wish I could ride in - it's 1600+ miles one way for me. I had to settle for calling an agent and ordering - they wouldn't do everything I wanted over the phone - I did get them to move the rider's pocket up 1 1/4 inches, and use their "soft" foam - never done that with a Corbin before.

I don't think there really was a "break in period". The seat felt good right away and it feels the same now. Appearance-wise, it also still looks as good as it did the day I rode out of the factory with it. I chose genuine leather and I've used the Corbin Saddle Cream on it a couple of times; not because I thought I needed to but because I didn't want to need to.

The best way I can compare it to a stock seat is you sit ON a stock seat and you sit IN a Corbin Gunfighter and Lady. I must say that I wish it was a little bit softer, especially after a 400+ mile day, but I'm going to fabricate a sheepskin cover before the next multi-day trip on it.

In a nutshell, I'm really glad that I spent the money for it. It improved the ride by a lot and it also looks great on the bike. My only complaint is I haven't been able to use the under-seat helmet hook since I replaced the stock seat which means I have to carry a cable, but that's not such a bad thing. I carry an Abus Phantom 8960 cable lock which will go through one sleeve of two jackets or two sleeves of one jacket ~and~ a full-face helmet.
