It's not unusual for these bikes to dump anything above the min level when cold; that is, when hot, they will puke up a bunch of coolant such that the res reads min when it's cooled down again.
The cap is responsible for flow between the radiator and the reservoir, so it's a prime suspect in this sort of stuff. It's also cheap, and sometimes it's easier to just throw $15 at it than it is to troubleshoot it.
Coolant should be replaced every two years, BTW.
