Hey All, Just a quick question . I have a new '06 ST - just had the 1k service last week. About 2 weeks ago did a ride on a hot day (35 C / 95 F) for about 300km, temp gauge never went above 6 or 7 bar and was mostly on the 5 bar.
When I stopped at the end of the ride and turned the motor off the coolant reservoir started to overflow and discharge onto the ground - via pipe underneath. When it cooled down the level had gone from MAX to 1 inch below MIN in the reservoir.
Topped up coolant and the next day it did the same thing.
Dealer inspected at 1k service and said all was OK ????
Should I be worried , I've never had a bike do this before and this is my 6th bike - Any suggestions or comments appreciated
( took cap off radiator when cool and it was full)

Maybe air in the radiator? There's a bleed screw on the right side of the radiator that should be removed when filling. I think you'll probably need to remove the right side fairing to get to it, but maybe it can be reached through the front. You could try removing the bleed screw with the bike on the center stand and then top off the radiator.

If the temp never got above 7 it's probably the overflow doing it's job as the liquid expands under high temps. Just like a car - shouldn't be an issue.

Keep an eye on the overflow reservoir under the left fairing panel (not whole side panel, the one near the dash, just left of the lights), if this is totally empty, top it up to somewhere about 23-40%. It's my understanding the radiator can both blow and suck (technical terms them) from this reservoir.

2011 GT spewing coolant after bike is off

Bringing this thread back to life. 2011 GT here

Same issue. Temp gauge fine. Rode the bike a few times since the weekend. Shut the bike off and it's spews about a cup of coolant.

Coolant was at Max in reservoir. then down to below Min.

Started riding again and returned to normal in reservoir.

Replaced coolant a few years ago. 1 time over summer the high temp light came on and then never came back on again after i turned bike off and on.
Maybe air? will look for pinched hoses.

Anyone else?

It's not unusual for these bikes to dump anything above the min level when cold; that is, when hot, they will puke up a bunch of coolant such that the res reads min when it's cooled down again.

The cap is responsible for flow between the radiator and the reservoir, so it's a prime suspect in this sort of stuff. It's also cheap, and sometimes it's easier to just throw $15 at it than it is to troubleshoot it.

Coolant should be replaced every two years, BTW.

Cheers,

The cap can be easily cleaned up w/ a tooth brush and water.

There is two springs in there. One is calibrated for letting the coolant flow in when the inside pressure is too low, and the second is calibrated to let the coolant out when the pressure is too high. Each sprint correspond to a gasket. So each gasket might get stuck (can't open up) or can't close properly.

So You can have separated symptoms:
If the excessive pressure can't get out something has to blow out (hose, gasket...)
If the excessive depression can't be compensated by any additional coolant flowing in you get some flat coolant hose when cold (I had that on the GT).
When either of the gasket is not properly closed (dirty) so you get coolant flowing out in the coolant tank and ultimately outside on the ground. You then may get into trouble because you may allow the coolant to boil not being able to maintain the coolant circuit pressure.

The boiling point of the coolant is maintained high because of the pressure. The coolant is not supposed to boil.

If cleaning up the cap caskets (usually it make the trick) doesn't make it so change it.

Cleaned the radiator cap really well which had some crud on it, nothing bad.

I called the dealer and they recommended to keep at or near minimum in the reservoir. They have seen where if you have at Max it will spew. I told them I have had at max for 5 years and no issues. Makes sense. Just like a car- hot and cold levels.

So I have it and the Mid point between Max and Min. will go for a ride warm her up and report back
