On my 35K mile 2013, I figured it was time to check the bearings in the shock linkage.
The grease had hardened to an almost plastic-like consistency.
Surprising (to me anyway) my 8K mile 2016 was almost exactly the same.
This plastic-looking orange stuff used to be grease.

Here's a pro tip, get a small very strong neodymium magnet that will fit inside the race, put it in a latex glove, stuff it in the race and the needle bearings will stick to it.
There are 24 needle bearings in each of the three races.
Use high quality waterproof grease.
