Can anybody tell me if the triples suffer from carb icing?Coming to work today, engine misfiring and would not idle. The throttle felt very heavy and unresponsive,also_Over 3500 rpm would clear up and be OK.The weather was foggy and around zero degrees.Does this sound like the symptoms to expect? One extra thought, switched off at work, clocked in,then restarted after no more than two minutes, the bike ran absolutely fine. Idled properly and revved up correctly

It sounds just like carb icing (and I should know, my Kwak suffers badly).

But my triumph has never suffered from carb icing. :???:

This morning was the worst possible conditions for it, freezing fog is as bad as it gets.

If you do need a fix for carb icing, you can buy Silkolene PRO FST from a bke shop for about £9 a litre, or Surgical Spirit from Sainsburys for about £3,50 a litre (same stuff, it's all Ethanol). You need to add about 1% by volume.

Mine does that too, I could never work out why. It struggles for a while then dies, will restart only to struggle on some more then die. If i stop for a few mins and then start it up again all is well. It's a real pain in heavy traffic, especially when it dies as i'm about to take a roundabout. A trip to the chemist for me too I think.

Whats 1% of a full tank of fuel? :???:

That sounds exactly like what happened to my Thunderbird a few years back. I was riding through the Coastal Mountains in the western USA and when I was at a low elevation, it was raining heavily; well, as I started gaining elevation, all that rain changed to snow and about 5 minutes into the snow, my engine started running very rough, just like you described.

I had to turn around and go back due to the snow buildup on the road and the fear that the motorcycle was going to freeze up...when I got lower down the mountains, the engine came back. I'm sure it was the carbs icing up.

When i had my Thunder Ace YZF1000R someone on one of the forums had problems with carb icing as well.
In the end he solved it with a small 12 volt bulb he attached inside the air box.
this is the link to te site just click on the topic.

Interesting, that is exactly what I was planning to try. I was just a little worried about have a live wire in the airbox along with all those petrol fumes. He doesn't say it works though, or did I miss that bit :???:

I went and bought 6 bottles the other day, I got an odd look from the pharmacist. He probably thought I was drinking the stuff.
:-g

I have found the cheapest place to buy it is Sainsbury, 82p a bottle. Superdrug charge £1.29 for the same brand

Hi Superfour and welcome to the club.

Posted similar a couple of years ago as my ride to work Trident Sprint suffers maybe a dozen days a year.

Rough low throttle performance and poor fuel consumption is how it shows. On the same journey its kind of weird, its the same places roundabouts and junctions.

Slinky is spot on with one cure, Pro FST works real good but ouch its expensive for everyday use.

Isopropanol is what I have been using, that is until I managed to get some Sprint Manufacturing lowers on my bike. These make the engine run slightly warmer, and seems to get warm air to the carb bodies and hey presto the low throttle/ no throttle miss go's.

So for you guys with exposed engines I guess its stay with the magic 1%

Cheers
