Hi guys,
I've been reading the post about '02/'03 ST's breaking crankshaft's:

http://www.triumphrat.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=55796&forum=20

I asked a question on page 4 but so far have had no reply (probably because everyone's busy - well it is Christmas eh?)

So if anyone's reading these post's, I wonder if someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge would mind answering what is probably a simple question.

I want to check the allen head bolt under the inspection cover (Crankcase) on the right-hand side of the engine (I have a 2003 ST).

Ideally I'd like to remove this bolt, clean it, put some Locktite threadlock on it, and re-tighten it to 53Nm to ensure it never comes loose.

1) Is this the way to go to ensure this bolt never comes undone again, or is Locktite overdoing it?
2) How the heck do I remove it without going to crazy lengths - I tried to loosen it tonight, but I can't lock it in place to undo it - what's the best/safest way to get this sucker out without breaking something inside?

Thanks to anyone who has a bit of spare time to answer this..

Have a great Christmas by the way . . . . . and once I get this sorted, I can spend my Christmas riding and playing with all the gadgets I'm going to get from Santa!

Regards,
Steve

hmmm ... no takers Steve.

There are a couple of members who have had dealings with it but maybe they havent signed on recently.

Spodman and Del-Tv would be worth trying.

Try emailing them - there is an email link at the bottom of their messages.

Grant

If you read the original thread carefully you will notice that several of the posts mention the loose fixing or allen bolt. You can easily remove the inspection cover to see if it is loose. I intend to do that every time I change oil. In an exchange of emails that I had, it was recommended to replace that bolt if you ever have to loosen it. It was also recommended to thoroughly clean the threads with something like brake cleaner then use loctite. The guy also said when he removed the bolt it was no where near 52nm but maybe half that. What I intend to do is just regularly check it. If I ever find it anywhere near loose I will replace and loctite it. Just between you, me and the outhouse, there is very little information to say what is the actual cause and getting good information even on the exact build dates isn't all that good.

I agree, the info is very very sparce - and to add to that I just rang Triumph New Zealand to ask - they denay any problem exists (surprise surprise) and informed me that forums are a waste of time, as the people who frequent them are a bunch of uninformed doom sayer!

Hmmm, I might try Triumph UK to see how they react to that statement!

Anyway, My problem is - How the heck do I UN-DO this bolt?
I tightened it by putting the bike in gear and holding the rear brake, but how the heck do I untighten it to get the darn thing out without buggering up something inside?

Thanks.
