Engine was apart for a bottom end repair.

Good battery. Plugs are sparking. Fuel is pumping. Compression seems to be there as when plugs are pulled were getting puffs thru the plug hole.

Best we got was a couple backfires.

Tomorrow going to change the plugs. Any other wisdom?

Don’t know your bike at all but those symptoms are almost invariably timing related. Could be valve or ignition, I’d check ignition first as it’s easier.

Reply from my dad who did the rebuild:

"That's too bad. I don't clearly recall about the plugs, I think we had them out when we turned the engine over after putting the cams on and setting all of that timing up. They tell you to manually run it through 720 degrees. After that we rechecked that the timing marks on the cam sprockets were aligned when the timing mark on the alternator was aligned with the split on the crankcase which should be TDC. We didn't check compression but didn't remove the valves either. Two lifters on one cylinder, same side either exh on intake, fell out whike tipping the head over and I popped them back in. Otherwise we didn't mess with the valves."
