I tore the motor down today, I didn't get as far as I wanted to though. I got the exhaust, carbs, cams, cam chain tensioner, and basically everything else off except for actually pulling the head and cylinders. Using the Haynes Manual and Dinqua's site really helped, and there were no real surprises. Well, the only 'surprise' was that I didn't screw anything up!

I didn't take any pics of the bike yet, but here are some sneak peeks at my new pistons and valves. These are the Wiseco 904cc pistons and some custom big valves, similar to Thrux-ton-up's engine work except I'm using the Wiseco kit and he is not.

Enjoy!

Wiseco piston (note the big valve pockets):

They meet for the first time:

all the pretty new valves, 2mm larger intake and 1mm larger exhaust:

More to come!

Fyi, the valves were made by Manley.

Well, at least now your probably not bouncing off the wall's like you were abitt ago with all the anticipation and such. The tear down process will help occupy you for a time, + you can still ride borrowing a bike for the nice weather days down there as well.

I'm waiting for the "First Impression's" thread after you get to take her out...lol

...you'll be grinnin from ear to ear :)

Your gonna love it man, no reason you shouldnt have 85 horses with the valves..maybe a couple more.

I have been thinking and , planing on doing the BB kit next year.
I wont to rack up a few more miles first.
But, now that I have been hearing rumors of this big a$$
twin coming out next year???? I don't know????
If it's as Beautiful as the other twins.
I just might be buying me one of them bad boy's.
I can always make room in the garage for another one.
But anyway, good luck sweat.
I will be looking forward to seeing and reading about your
progress and that big O smile on your face when you get
her back on the road and crack the throttle.

Those aren't parts, they're works of art! Enjoy looking at them now, and enjoy riding with them later. I can only imagine how close you'll feel to your bike after physically having your hands on all the parts that make all the power. Now that's impowerment! Best wishes for a great upgrade.

Forgot you werent doing carbs yet...I'm gonna guess 69/73 hp :)
Aww, why you gotta take my horsies away?

I'm hoping for at least 70, hell as long as we're hoping I'm gonna say 80! These intake valves are 30% larger than the stock valves (I think) and there's 2 per cylinder so I'm thinking even with the stock carbs I'll have to rejet to 160s or 165s even. That's a lot more fuel. I can't imagine being under 70 hp.

Thanks Bob, I've always thought machined parts were beautiful, like jewelry. Now if only I could talk my girlfriend into a machined ring...

I ordered my valve seals from Bikebandit last week, they said they'd arrive within 7-10 days...

I'm having the head ported, polished, and I'm going to inquire about matching and cc'ing the combustion chambers. The Wiseco kit is 10.5-1 and these valves don't have the reliefs that the stock valves do so I'm thinking the compression will be a tad higher, how much I have no idea.

I'm still not certain of where I'm getting the machine work done. There's a place 2 blocks from my house that's reputable, there's another place near me that was recommended, and Dinqua recommended Sealy Machine in New York, but I'd rather keep it local. Hopefully the place near my house is ok.

I can't wait!

Hey sweatmachine,
That's really cool that you're doing your own work like that. So you're thinking about doing different carbs later, but for now want to stick with the stock one's and change the jets, see how that works out. That sounds smart. Sounds like you're increasing the compression ratio considerably. You'll want to use high test from now on, even then I think Sunoco has a 94 octane, maybe best to use that one, 10.5 to 1 is pretty high compression. I guess you'd have to do the air box elimination too, that would make sense if you haven't done so already. Good luck, and remember to keep everything spotlessly clean, how about bearings like the main bearings, cam bearings, etc, do you need to replace/upgrade these? I wish I had a garage and little machine shop to mess around with my Scrambler, but city life doesn't permit those luxuries. Again, good luck, and I'm sure you will gain a lot of satisfaction from a job done well by yourself, and a few extra horsepower is always a good thing. Ride safe.

I got the motor completely torn down today, really it went pretty easy following Dinqua's directions:

Here's the head, just before pulling the cam chain off its gear:

another:

Nothing extra special here, I just wanted to snap a good 'before' pic of the intake before the port/polish work is done:

Here I've got the cam chain off, and am just about ready to pull the head:

here are my fat fingers holding the piston up. Note the cam chain hanging from the backbone of the frame:

I've got the head and cylinder soaking in some detergent now, I'll snap a pic of them in a bit. Off to the machine shop tomorrow!
