The (stock on my ST1050?) red rubber cover for the positive battery connection (at the battery) is pretty useless for the orientation that the wire attaches to the post. Has anyone come up with a better solution?

Glue a rubber flap on to the battery box, long enough to be pinched under the strap that holds the battery maybe.

I used a cap from a small pill bottle, Advil, I believe.
I cut a notch out of it and it pushed right on to the terminal.
best of all, it's now a tamper proof battery!

I was going to suggest you find a big baby pacifier ('soother', to you Brits) and cut the business end off. Notch it with a soldering iron, and slip it over the terminal.
