Funny you shound mention, I watched the highlights of the inagural Moto ST at Daytona. There was 1 Tuono there, I don't believe it finished due to bike troubles. But when it was out it was the fastest on the banks.
I ride with the guy I bought my bike from, he now rides an Aprilia Factory. He loves it, he will not say that it's better than the Triple, just different. He comments on the Triple everytime we ride together, a reluctant sell, but he had to do it ot afford his $20,000 Aprilia.
Back to topic.... I have read a couple of reviews on the Tuono, all were good. I've seen one in person and they look good until you get to the front. But if you're a good rider, all anyone will see is the beautiful tail section. :-D

A friend of mine has one, speedy has no prob keeping up on the straight or in the twisties. We swaped out a few times but I feel the Tuono is nowhere near as much fun as speedy. But thats just my opinion. His opinion was the Triple felt a lot smoother. They are nice bikes, just not my cup of tea.

depends on what you want. The tuono takes longer to get up to speed more revvy like a regular crotch rocket as where the S3 has mondo torque from the get go. However the tuono just won naked bike shootout (even though it is almost completely faired) in cycleworld magazine. However I think thy are a little bias as the milli won there superbike shoot out this year too. Dont get me wrong both great bikes but best???????

I was torn between the Tuono and the Speed Triple, but obviously the S3 won out, mostly due to the price difference (I'm a bang-for-the-buck kind of guy) and the possibility of manufacturer/dealer support in the future. I test rode the Tuono and was very impressed by how easy it was to ride fast right out of the box. The handling was very nice. I never took one out back-to-back with the Trip though, so it's hard for me to say which one I'd pick, all things being equal.

Nice bike performance wise. Ugly looks when compared to the other Aprilia offerings. The Tuono looks almost like a Factory with just the fairing ripped off and some low quality aftermarket cockpit fairing duct taped on. Head on look is similar to a baby bird that is crying for mommy to feed it.

On the plus side they finally gave Tuono the newer style ass section, instead of the oldie dual light Mille rear.

Also I hear that due to the factory struggling and changing owners regularly the after sales support is almost nonexistent. Very expensive spare parts and very long time waiting to get them.

I would not buy one.

+1, I researched them before buying my triple but was not satisfied with the local dealers experience level or the reports of unsatisfactory support that I'd heard. Actually, the first Aprillia dealership that I went to gave up the Aprillia line and is now selling Triumphs (Swansea Cycle).

I almost bought one....but then came to my senses and ran to the triumph dealership and spent the considerable amount of $$$ I saved on a new costume. Alpinestar leathers, AraI helmet, SP-1'S, etc. Gear I would have put off buying for another year had I dropped 14K on a Tuono.

For me the Hits are, the sound, the bodywork and graphics, the cockpit, that beautiful swingarm and the meticulous attention to detail. A riding buddy has one and I drool over it every chance I get. I discover some new trick bit every time I look at it.

The Misses: Its bigger than the S3, which for me is a problem as I resemble Frodo Baggins. The engine compartment looks like 10lbs of ***** in a 5lb bag, little bits and pieces sticking out all over the place(beautiful though they are)...I wouldn't want to wash it, and that fairing....ugh. I think the S3 will age much more gracefully. As for reliability, the local Ducati/Aprilia shop had one in I spotted fitted with saddlebags and 40K+ miles on the clock getting serviced for regular maintenance. !!!! I think they're reliable.

I've riden the Tuono and owned an 01 mille, The 03 tuono was good to ride pretty much like the S3 just different in it's power delivery not as quick off the mark as the S3 but once you get into it's torque range feck!!! And the sound is to die for at full noise. Handling was good the Showa/ Sachs combo is budget compared to the Ohlins of the R and Factory but for every day street riding it was fine just like the S3

I swapped bikes for a while with a buddy who's got a standard '04 Tuono while we were riding a pretty curvy (for these parts) country road. Here's my impression of it -

First, the stock suspension and chassis on his Aprilia were clearly superior to my stock '04 Triple. In fact, riding that bike convinced me that I needed to upgrade my suspension. The Aprilia handled mid-corner bumps exceptionally well and overall just had a feeling of rock-solid stability, yet it was still very manueverable.

Comparing the motors was a little harder to judge fairly, because this particular Tuono had a full Akro exhaust system and re-tuned fueling along with a smaller (-2) front sprocket. It was very strong and would lift the front wheel on a whim. Suffice to say that it did not lack for power.

Brakes were no better or worse - a wash on that.

Ergonomics weren't substantially different. The Aprilia has slightly higher handlebars and the seat-to-peg distance might be a little tighter. The ride was too brief to form any ideas about long-term comfort.

I liked the Tuono a lot, but not so much that I would be willing to trade in the Triple for one, and for the same reasons already mentioned: it looks stripped; costs more; uncertainty about parts & service.
