So I have a dilema. I have enough money for one, but not the other. I'm trying to decide between getting something like the helite turtle airbag vest and putting that over my cheap and a couple year old jacket and pants. Or I can get a newer better armored and quality jacket and pants. I'm still on the fence about textile vs leather, but I'm leaning toward textile since it gets so hot and humid here for 3 months in the summer. Any advice? Would you take the airbag vest over better pants and jacket or not?

The airbag systems do look impressive...but you need to balance that with how often you will actually wear it. They tend to be bulkier than an armoured jacket. And if the model you are looking at is just a vest, you still need proper road-rash protection underneath it. There are air bag systems that are incorporated into full jackets you might want to look at.

I like the new Dyneema fiber that Saint uses in their jackets/pants. Single layer/not a lining. It is better than Kevlar, on-par with leather (6 seconds drag time), breathes extremely well and looks similar to standard denim. They also have armoured versions available...CE rated.

i recommend the airbag vest if protecton is your priority.Assuming you have road rash protection in your existing older jacket. the helite vest has back armor so no need for that.

i got the helite vented / mesh airbag jacket when it was on sale and love it except it is too hot for 90 degree riding. Very nice design though

I have both at this point. Just picked up the airbag vest about a week ago and I don't find it to be bulky at all. It just fits over my jacket and doesn't seem to cause any problem blocking the jacket's air vents either. Bought the hi-rez version to help improve chances of my being seen. Hopefully never need to use it but glad to have the extra protection. If I couldn't do both at the same time I think I would go with the vest and then follow up by improving the rest of the gear in time.

That is really good to hear. I am glad they aren't bulky like they look. I don't know if i want that hi-res verison though? I am going to get a pair of saints jeans. Thanks for the advice on that. There is a sale on them right now! I'm going for the armored. So I found a leather shop that can take my leather jacket and make it fit better for cheap. Then I'll be covered from road rash. Its a great option since now I can afford the vest because of that.
