The other day I was starting my 2000 955i, it sounded a bit lumpy for 2-4 mins. Then it seemed fine. The fuel light was on so I filled her up, all was well.

Today it did the same, but I checked the oil, it was a little low, not too much so I put a bit in.

BUT the top of the cap was a little milky. The classic sign in my MGB of the dreaded Head Gasket Failure.

Howver, I have noticed NO overheating, NO loss of power, NO other issues other than cold staret lumpyness and NO loss of water.

Is there ANYTHING this could be other than a HGF?

I thought I would look at the sparks, but cant get to them as I am stuck with the tank ON atm.

Any help please?

Thx

how about one of your blow by vents....

normally on a car it has a PCV system which recirculates and when it gets clogged you'll see a milky substance

if one of your vent lines is kinked or clogged it won't have a way to get out

just a theory

How "milkey" was it?
How long has it been since you changed the oil - time and miles?
How long had it been since you rode the bike?

If it was only slightly milky, and it has been a while since the oil was changed and the bike has been riden, it COULD simply be condensation in the oil. This can occur inside the oil sump during use in cooler air temps.

Chaps:

Thanks for your reply.

OK.

1. Its cold here atm. Freezing the garage, well it is frosty outside.
2. Oil Change, was done before I bought it nearly a year ago. It is booked in for a C Service this month.
3. Its month less than 5K since the last change, I would say.
3. I am a light rider, not daily. I rode it maybe 2 weeks ago for a short trip (5 miles), before that. I don't know.

How would this explain the lumpy start, just very cold weather? I was cold both times and when warm doesnt do it.

SORRY:

1. Where are the vent lines?
2. How do I get the sparks?

:)

Thx

The lumpy idle can be spark plugs (old or rusty), carbon build up, or intake balancing - to name a FEW.

Sounds like it may be condensation in the oil.

To get to the spark plugs, you will need to remove the tank and airbox. The plugs are under the coils on top of the head/engine. The one on the left side (#1) can be difficult to get out/in.

The crankcase vent line runs from the top of the gearcase (behind head) and up to the airbox.

I hope this helps.

By the way, your name "Lotus-Max" is this car related?

Cheers guys.

Yeah, Lotus as in the car. S1 Elise (see pix on www.peanutmonkey.co.uk)

I used to live in Weybridge, by the statio, behind Brooklands race track :)

OK, Tank and Airbox off, ( I working wirelessly with lappy beside me! :) )

I cant get a socket on the plug... do I need a special one?

Ta! :)

I have a S2 Elise - 111R Yoda drivetrain.

You will need a deep plug socket - the ones with rubber inside to hold the plug. It can be done with a regular deep socket, but you will need to reach into the plug well and remove the plug once it is loose. A plug socket is easier.

You may also need an extension and a "wobble" adapter to get at the left hand plug - IF the frame is in the way.

PS: I check the crack case tube (big fat tube leading to air box)

It has gunky residue in it, like coffee.

I dont know exactly what this means, I have tried both spark sockets I own on the plugs...
No joy :(

Are you pushing down on the E-clip - while holding your mouth JUST right?

How do the plugs look?

Re: your PS above - the gunk in the crankcase vent line is oil vapor residue. You can remove the hose (both ends) and spray carburetor cleaner into the hose to clean it fairly easily.

Hmm.
Plugs look good.

Now, the bike is over reving, and the Engine Light is on.

The trottle isnt sticking to my knowledge.

I must have done something wrong.

Questions:

The Tank has the 2 fuel lines, does it matter which way they are plugedd in?

There is a Silver/Alloy pipe coming out of the Tank to the side of the fuel pipes, I thought I took a pie away from but I have no idea what happened to it.

What is it?

Sorry to hijack this thread for a short while.
Dev sad to say I don't have a plug socket to pull out the plugs.
5/8 you said, how about the length? And the wobble bit needed for the 06 S3?
Any pics?
Need to buy one and a bit of info would sure help me NOT getting the wrong one.

Tks

"Lotus-max - Did you connect the vacuum lines from the throttle body back to the MAP sensor? "

I thought I connected everything back.

What does the MAP Sensor look like?

I connected:

1. 2x Fuel Lines
2. White COnnector Below That
3. Thing I circle3d, I left alone
4. Black Elec connector on a short wire under the tank.
5. Various Breathers under the tank.

:)
