be careful if the frame has had too much oil

what happens in normal use is that some condensation forms in the top part of the frame tube under the tank. This leads to rust.
I overfilled and found a massive amount of debris in the oil filter at the change ( literally one hour after i overfilled)
I had filled it and gone for a run before an oil change.

the hot excess oil washes out the normally unused bit of the frame
Luckily I use a charlies filter and that saved the engine.

i had to wire brush and clean the under tank section which is very hard to access.

what plastic side covers?

they should be cast aluminium on your bike

they look pretty good polished up or polished then painted

They actually look quite good with the original covers and panels in a tank colour match rather than black
Much later on, the later bikes had plastic outer covers and some were bike coloured.

But if you don't have the back box then It's a fair bit of hassle
But fit an air filter

AFAIk there are only two types of OIF USA tank ( slimline)

the earlier ones and the later (seamless) ones.
