Sunday was a great day for riding. A group of us planned to ride to a classic bike event two hours away. We’d hit some nice back roads and make a day of it. We were all coming from different directions so we settled on a location that would put us near the first road we wanted to test.

I arrived late because of an accident and nobody was there. I didn’t know if everybody was also running late so I took this opportunity to grab a cup of coffee. I waited for a half-hour and realized they must have thought I wasn’t coming. I figured since I had a couple of routes planned - I take one of them and would meet them there.

I go to fire up the bike - nothing. :???: Check the kill switch, all the lights are on. Go to fire the bike up again - nothing. I had a similar problem coming back from Ohio, took it to the dealer and they found nothing. We soon discovered I blew a fuse. However, once the fuse was replaced it still wouldn’t start. We soon discovered that if I let the bike cool down it would start.

Thinking this might be the same problem coming back to haunt me, I let the bike cool down. So, I go grab another cup of coffee and a donut. Finish, check the time and now it's 11:10. Go to fire the bike up - nothing!!!

I remove my seat to check the fuses and all looked fine; so I let the bike cool down longer. It's now 11:45 and I attempt to start the bike again - nothing. I call my wife and she was in Hagerstown with her father helping him to pick out a new washer and dryer. So, they have the truck and are 30 minutes from Chambersburg, which puts them an hour from my location; but they would have to unload the washer and dryer before they could come pick me and my bike up. :(

I try to start the bike again - nothing. A gentleman in a Ranger Rover came over to talk to me. He told me he had a silver 955i with Wolf exhaust and loved it. He went on and on and I humored him. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "Could I barrow you Range Rover and drive over my bike, smashing it to bits." He was a nice guy.

Time check (12:30). A guy trailering a Harley comes over and I asked if he would help me to bump start my bike. He said no problem. We tried and tried - nothing. We gave up and I thanked him. My wife finally called and said they were on the way home and she'd be there to get me. After I got off my cell phone I noticed a girl was standing there waiting for me to get off the phone. She asked me for directions. She asked how to get to I-81. She was waaaaaaay off. How she got this far I don't know. I pointed her in the right direction and she thanked me.

Time check (1:30): My wife is on the way but couldn't fine the tie-downs; so she was stopping to get a new set. I told her to call me when she got to the square.

Time check (2:15): My wife calls so I'm telling her where to pull in so I would have an easy time loading the bike. Just for kicks I try starting the bike and it started up. I called my wife and she was irritated too. She said she would find a place to turn around and would see me at home.

You have no idea how pissed I was. No idea. I'm still contemplating selling the ***** bike for something else. I know, it may seem silly but I'm bitter.

Man, sorry to hear all that. Strange indeed. Maybe a lose wire, but then again it has only happened twice and if a loose wire it would happen more often. I am not familiar with alot of small stuff on the bike, but is there a temp sensor on these things? Maybe that is going bad, and the computer thinks it is too hot because of the bad sensor, and will not allow you to start.

A buddy of mine who is a tech said when he gets back from Florida (he has to go down for recertification) he'll check it out. He thinks it might be a lose ground somewhere.

Another Triumph owner said he had a similar experience and it ended up being the battery. So who knows.

Jenks, Sounds to me like it can also be an open field in your starter, if you can hear the solenoid click. Each armature has it's own field wiring and if that's the armature field lined up with the field magnet...nothing happens.

Annoying!

The previous battery I had in my Daytona had a bad terminal - some type of short in it - would start at times (no worries) and others, it would act like a dead battery. Had the thing cut out completely on me while riding - no power at all the bike just cut off.

This morning when I was moving the bike to get my car out I was thinking of this thread. I was thinnking of another possibility. The switch on the clutch. Maybe a loose wire on it, or the switch itself could be going bad.

I take it when you put the key in start and the kill switch is on, the gauge , I call it "boots up"? But when you pull the clutch in and hit the start button, nothing happens as if you were not pulling in the clutch to start?

Had my bike cut out on me while going 50 through twisties. Pulled off the road and checked the bike out. Nothing to be seen. Pulled the clutch in, lifted the stand up and she started up. Took a look at the bike that night and discovered a lot of crude around the side stand switch. Clened it with electrical cleaner and have not had the problem since.

This has got to be a contact or a ground. Lectrics don't fix themselves. Check what everyboby said. Also the starter switch, any relays or other connections you may have added.
Battery, terminal connections, starter switch and kick stand switch. It's got to be in there unless you believe in ghosts.
I'm an old biker and still try to start it in gear with the kick stand down.

I had the same thing happen to me on a ride. Thought I was going to be stranded. Embarassing to say the least. I was with my brother on his speed triple and my buddy on his 748 Duc. we stopped at a rest stop full of Harley's. A lot of people were checking out our bikes and commenting how nice they were. We going to leave and mine won't start. After about 20-30 min. It finally cranked over and fired up. Would yours at least turn over? Mine would, it just wouldn't fire. It has only happened twice in 2 years, but if you figure out what is wrong, please post it.

Thanks :-D

I will. A buddy of mine who is a tech is going for his recertification in Orlando. Once he gets back we're going to go over the bike. I'll keep you posted.
