Hello everyone, Triumph newbie here.

Pick this up for $700 with broken sprag clutch gear teeth and then sat outside for quite some times.

Congratulations! She definitely needs some love. At least the sprag on those engines isn't too difficult to fix. You're going to want to disassemble and inspect everything on the bike, service everything. Have you gotten into the airbox to see if there are/were any pests inside?

You show a picture of the ziptie on the rear axle locking pin like it's an example of poor maintenance.

The Dealership I take my bike to does that. I asked them why, since the pin has a locking feature, and they said they'd seen them come off.

However, I use only black (UV) ones.

Yes, I learned a lot from this great forum after picked up the bike. And found the sprag clutch on bike is already the newer one. So I just need to find all 3 idler gears.
There is no surprise inside airbox :smile2:, just a dirty filter. And yes, need a lot of time to clean and check everything out.
So fuel tank drained, all fluid changed. And just keep cleaning.

And fuel pump is clogged then caused fuse number 2 blown.

I thought that's standard procedure as bike always serviced at dealer.

It looks like you found something to keep you out of mischief for a little while.
Thanks. Yes, exterior seems in good shape except the tail got damaged when trunk bracket collapsed.
Gonna need lot of effort to make her looks and function right.

New rivet for heat shield.

Spark plugs, CR8EK, looks in good condition. Sparks test good too.

Sprag clutch removed, clutch alone looks good and functional.

Air filter washed.

TuneEcu cable ordered.

And keep cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.

You seem to be very motivated. It's worth it.

While you are at it check the charging system and stator to RR connection.


It's beginning to look like a real bike now. I am sure you'll find used parts to replace the broken gears.


Was she hill starting?

That's shaping up really well, I wish I was that motivated but one puddle and it's over.

While you're at it, hit each disc rotor button with a drop of penetrating oil (another fellow here says he spins them with a suction attachment on a drill). They tend to crust into place if they sit for a long time and then the bike hops when you hit the brakes.
Acetone/ATF mixed at a 1:1 ratio works well and you can make a lifetime supply for under $15.

Haha, Just hate to see bike like this go to junk yard or became pile of metal.

Here is $500 BMW R1100RT project from last year. Been like this for 10 years, thankfully it was kept inside garage.

Stator and R/R test good. But order a used sh775aa and Triumph harness T2500676 to be on safe side, thanks to the great thread by DEcosse. I have been stranded on roadside by dead R/R or stator before so they are always on my checklist.
Bike is not running when I got it. Starter cover and idler gears removed by dealer and never been put back. Dealer quoted $1000 for the job, and then she just sat outside.
Moisture or maybe even water got into engine through there, oil became a bit milky when drained. Engine turn manually through crankshaft seems okay though.
Found sparg clutch set with idler gears and starter covers for $110 on ebay.:smile2:

That BMW turned out nice.
An old buddy had one of those but sold it after dropping it twice in short order.
It was simply too big for him.

And while on the brake side, get the pistons out as much as you can and clean thoroughly each piston.
I guess the brake fluid is already done.

But caliper brake pins got a bit corrosion.
I put anti-seize on them.


Great bike BTW. I am not a BMW connoisseur (just owned a K1200RS that I didn't like much) but she looks in great shape.

Thanks, it looks much better in person since it only has 18,869 miles.
I'm 5'7 160lbs, and drop it once during first week. Sprint is much slimmer compare to RT.

Did you services the rear hub?

Probably required given the age of the bike. Maybe the shock assembly/links bearings as well.

Waiting for the big socket to arrive for rear hub. Rear wheel turns smooth and no signs of gaps when pushing 12/6 or 3/9 clock position though.

Rear shock link and sleeve has been replaced according to Po's record. Bike has 31,606 miles now.

All brake caliper pistons have been pushed out a bit to fully clean during dot 4 brake fluid change.

Fuel pump is alive now after soaked in carb cleaner.:smile2:

Got a used tail and polished the tips of exhaust cover.

Crank position sensor removed and cleaned.
