From what I can gather this has some 75 different items/parts that are either checked, upgraded, corrected, whatever.

How do you know if the 2005 you have or interested in qualifies for this... update ? Is it by VIN ?

If it's ever been done or not if you are thinking about purchasing a 2005 year model.

Is this a factory recall ? My cost or Triumphs ? Is there a age limit if a 2005 has not had it done ?

Okay, probably a lot easier for me to email or call a dealer... but will trust the answers and opinions here !!!

Thanks again... Ride Safe.

I have a 2005 with 63K miles on it that does not have this "upgrade kit". and haven't had any mechanical issues whatsoever. Triumph has covered a few bikes, but I would be very surprised that they would cover one this old..

My dealer told me that if the bike requires repair, they would upgrade related parts. So if they need to fix your brakes and a brake part is covered, they're not going to tear your engine apart and upgrade engine parts. I image they would charge for labor in any case.

Yes, it is by VIN number. But there seems to be several "kits" available, as well as a full kit. Which one your dealer gets seems to be a bit random. Most of the upgrades are related to the trans gears, dogs, output shaft, and shift star. The labor is not cheap because the engine has to come out, and the case split - I have done this a couple of times already, and still need to do my own R3.

In some cases, Peter Carleo has authorized 1/2 the cost of the parts for some R3 riders that are experiencing issues on older bikes. But nothing for some others. You can always call and ask. But if you are not having issues, I wouldn't recommend it.

I hope this helps.

What year did Triumph make all of the changes to the R3? I heard it was the 08 model. Engine changes and frame changes. What changes did Triumph really make and when?

I have an '05 and the full upgrade kit was installed about 2 1/2 years ago. I had taken the bike to the dealer for a new back tire and battery. While it was there, the service manager heard a noise and called Triumph about it. That afternoon Triumph approved the kit and labor. It took about 10 days for the parts to come in and to get the repairs done. Many thanks to Myers in Asheville for their vigilance on this matter. I noticed easier shifting and less running gear noise after the fix.

I have an 05 that has 25000 miles on it and I have never had any problems. I have heard a lot about the shaft bearing problem but I have never seen a recall for it or a kit that has all the parts to make the fix. Does someone know where you find this recall on the Triumph site all I can find are safety recalls? It would be nice to know where to go if the problem shows up.

The was never a recall or even a public statement of a recognized problem. All fixes were done on an as needed basis and only a very small number of the total production ever had a problem. My son's 2005 Rocket is only several weeks newer in build date from mine and his has more miles than mine but no problems what so ever.

Hey guys, I just dropped the motor on my 05 R3 with 50k miles because of the shift bolt head shearing off. Any suggestions while I have it opened? Is there a way to get this upgrade kit that I've been hearing about? I ran my VIN but the only recall that came about was for an ECU upgrade.

Any help would sure be nice.

Two full upgrade kits depending on vin #
Whole kit with LOTS of parts cost me just over £100
That is very very cheap considering contents.
If you have trouble getting one, send me your vin & I'll check with my dealer.
Les

Just seen you have an 05 so do not need vin, same kit as mine.

I spoke with a dealer today who has never heard of such a thing, but he's only been dealing with Triumph for 3 years now. He ran the PN and said the kit was $1600.

My VIN is SMTC00L405J212508. What ever you can do for me would be most appreciated!!

Cheers!

Yep the price went up the middle of this year. Although I heard 1200 not 1600 but hey there is a lot in the kit.

Oh WOW. Thanks a lot for checking on it.

I plan to contact a local shop on Monday after the holiday break and see if they can help me out.

I am not sure if this will work out but I tried to attach the update kit parts list and instructions. You will see there is a lot of parts besides the important transmission and out put drive parts. If your not into spending the money for the whole kit I would consider the trans, out put drive and cam chain guides with a new chain since yours has some miles on it. Of course the prices on that might make the full kit seem worth while.

Fantastic info Warp, thanks a bunch! I'm really on the fence as far as what to do with the old girl. I'm really weighing the cost of repair vs rebuild vs part out and buy used. I spoke with a guys down at D&D who was very helpful. His advice was same as yours that at a minimum, replace the output bearing. Does anybody know why they replaced the output shaft cover along with the bearing? That alone is $100.

If I did go forward with the repair, should I stop there on a motor with almost 50K miles on it. How much more would it take to just rebuild it? gasket kits run $400-$500.

Turns out Scott is right (again)
I paid just over £100 years ago for my upgrade kit, which was ridiculously cheap.
Dealer today quoted me almost £1000 +vat, he would give some discount but not good news.

Yeah, I've done some research and it looks like I've struck out again. I actually found a full parts breakdown on the kit and it looks like Triumph is trying to actually sell the kit with "all the extra parts" at pretty close to what it would go for piecing it out. The "Wonderful World of Triumph" site lists the kit at $1882 - and piecing is out is $2218.
