Before I get started I have to thank the nicest guy I've never met...Devious2xs. His posts on this site as well as on Thespeedtriple.com have proven to be invaluable. His knowledge of engines makes him a tuning guru and he unselfishly shares his latest findings, usually with photos. The removal of the exhaust precat, the removal of the SAI, the DIY advice for ceramic coating, his posting of tuning maps, his review of his Trident half system, the suggestion that HD dealerships probably have a dyno and more tuning experience than Japenese shops, ...the list goes on. He has patiently answered all my emails/pm's, walked me through some routine (for him) stuff, and encouraged me to do some of the work myself. His substance over BS posts keep me coming back although Cheapbastards sense of humor does keep me laughing.

I have a 2006 S3 with 2200 miles on it. I ordered the Trident CF half system and when it arrived I took the "Y" pipe and my header to HD of Frederick. They have a kick a$$ machine shop and the machinists/fabricators to go with it. I talked to Mike Shultz, a top shelf guy, and told him what I wanted. He removed the precat and ported the headers and sent everything off to be ceramic coated. When it returned I installed everything along with a BMC air filter. I then went to Fredericktown Triumph and talked to Jerry Gentry the Service Manager, another top shelf guy. He removed the SAI and installed Kuhlka's block-off plates and installed the Triumph precat removed-SAI removed-high pipe tune.

Today I rode the 35 miles to HD of Frederick at 8am in 22 degree weather. My hands were frozen after 20 miles and when I arrived my johnson looked like a swizzel stick and my boys looked like raisenettes. Anywho...Mike Shultz put the S3 on the dyno and it made 125.13 max rwhp at 9000 rpm and 77.65 max rwtq at 7500 rpm. The air/fuel is lean at full throttle and I'll probably clean that up and squeeze another few hp and tq with a Tuneboy. For now though I'm pretty happy with the results. Thanks again Devi!

 :gpst: Devi is the man. He has been of GREAT help to me also, Tight. We haven't quite finished up ol yeller yet, but she's git'n there. :-D Hopefully, I can git her to a dyno after all of Devi's help, and show some #'s myself. :-D The man has some great patience also, he puts up with my ignorant responses all of the time. :-D

Ok here's how it goes. Ya buy a can, so the backfires start. Block off or get rid rid of the SAI hardware (you'd need a non SAI tune to do this) to eliminate the back fires. Next in line is probaly an air filter, which makes the mixture even leaner in the mid range. We probably get rid of the pre-cat whiich helps a wee bit. But now we need to get the bike on a dyno to sort out the fuelling. Now we need a power commander or preferably a tune boy. This is where we start getting a few more ponies.

Yep. It NEVER ends reasonably. :upthumb:
Ya'll are makin me blush.
All I wanted is to help - just like I have been helped in the past. I am just glad it is helping a few.

125 hp WITHOUT tuning is impressive, but the next step needs to be tuning.

Never heard a dumb question, only dumb answers.

VERY good point. But then again, Cheep isn't one I would consider as a good example - for much of anything. :hammer:

I may have confused some of you. I DO have a tune...the Triumph TORS SAI removed, precat removed, aftermarket high pipe installed tune. Judging from the lean air/fuel mixture I will need a Tuneboy to straighten things out. It's always something...and it's always money.

Roadkill...Fredericktown Triumph has only done some small jobs for me (install TORS tune, remove SAI, install frame sliders) although I think I'll be taking my S3 there for the 6000 mile check up. I've talked at length with Jerry Gentry, the Service Manager, and have found him to be personable and knowledgeable. Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble

Cheap, as soon as you get faster, someone comes along that is fastest - but not for long. Kind of like when you're riding - it's the journey that counts, not the destination.

Roadkill - As the TinMan said,"If I only had a brain". When the gears get turning, the smell of burning 90wt gets pretty strong. Forcing round ducks into square rows takes its toll.

Secondary Air Injection systems allow air into the exhaust to burn off and dilute any unburned hydrocarbons from the fuel in order to reduce emmisions of CO, NOx, etc.

On the Speed Triples, a solenoid is activated by the ECU and allows air from the airbox into a reed valve for each cylinder on top of the cylinder head. The air enters the exhaust port when the solenoid opens.

It is noticeable when letting off the throttle by the popping under decelleration.

It tends to give the O2 sensor readings that are not correct, and makes tuning a bit harder.

On that note, I still have some sets of SAI block-off plates available. PM me for info or see thespeedtriple.com forums for details...
