Gearbox again
Indexing in 1st with a new camplate went very well once.
Up through the gears no problem.
Going back down through, no 1st gear.
It doesn`t like riding the hump between neutral and first.
Pushing on the plunger, it went easily.
So, I thought I`ll shorten the old spring.
And while I`m at it, I`ll measure the shafts with a mic. (did it ages ago with vernier)
Main left .8100....in spec.
Main right .7485... 0.0009 under spec.
Layshaft left .6865... 0.0005 under spec.
Layshaft right .6869... 0.0001 under spec.
Does a few 10th`s make that much difference?

Hi Dave

I would not be worrying about those shafts. They'll see you out.

Let's just look at what you say here; "It doesn`t like riding the hump between neutral and first.". The humps between neutral and 2nd and neutral and 1st appear identical. The hump between 3rd and 4th is larger by far than either 1st or 2nd, so I doubt the shape of the camplate is the problem with not selecting 1st gear.

Better go and have another look. RR

By "main right" I take it you mean the timing-side end of the mainshaft. That's the 1st gear area. Doesn't low gear on a 5-speed have a bush you can renew to a tighter size?

Regardless, the answer to your question is probably found within this question: Exactly how many miles do you plan on riding your bike in first gear?

;)
