Sprag clutch starter

I was no looking for that , I thought i got lucky and had a model without the weakness of the starter clutch.

Today, I think it just happen... no starter motor but a low sound a of maybe a little electric spinning and the RPM needle going a bit crazy.

It s a 1994 750 Trident, anyone experienced something similar.

Thanks

Eric

So when you try to start your bike, you hear a spinning gear and your rpm’s go crazy? When it happened to me, the engine would turn over but I would hear a loud clanking.

same here, metallic clattering sound

A Triumph is for life, not just for Christmas

The roar of Moses' Triumph is heard in the hills. Joshua's Triumph was heard throughout the land. Sprint900dave's Triumph was seen and heard all round Birmingham.UK

I have the quiet spinning gear sound and the crazy RPM needle moving bUT no loud clanking.
Battery is brand new, it usually started well.
Thanks

“no starter motor...a little (quiet) electric spinning” doesn’t sound like its cranking the engine at all. Is it possible for just the starter motor to spin by itself? (I’m not too familiar with the inner workings). Maybe the OP could post a link to a video w/sound?

It looks like a weak (brand new....) battery.
Just tried it with an another battery, the engine is cranking, but not starting.
The sparkplugs are more than 10 years old, maybe it 's time.

The starter motor gear is directly engaged into an intermediate gear that turns the sprag clutch. If the sprag clutch didn't function at all then yes you would hear the starter motor spin without engine cranking. Highly unlikely that a sprag would completely not function. Years ago when I had two Trophys, the one was a high mileage '95 given to me by my brother. My original 96 900 BRG would get the new battery and it's the old battery would go into the '95 900. My own stupidity killed the sprag on the '95.
Lesson learned, don't use a crappy battery.
I have replaced about 3 sprags on other Trophys since. It's a big job.
A few days ago I rode my '96 to Home Depot. I leave it in gear when I park it. After getting the item I needed I attempted to start it. Ignition key on, clutch pulled in, but the sidestand was still down. The engine cranked over just fine but no start, sidestand was then put up and it started right up. Now my '98 Sprint won't even turn over while in gear with the side stand down. Strange. So your last post said it was cranking over but not starting. Is the side stand plunder switch coming out when the side stand it up. Sometimes that little plunger gets stuck, there is only a small spring to push it out.

I don’t think his bike is actually cranking, is it? If the engine doesn’t turn over, would that be considered “not cranking?”
