The starter motor gear is directly engaged into an intermediate gear that turns the sprag clutch. If the sprag clutch didn't function at all then yes you would hear the starter motor spin without engine cranking. Highly unlikely that a sprag would completely not function. Years ago when I had two Trophys, the one was a high mileage '95 given to me by my brother. My original 96 900 BRG would get the new battery and it's the old battery would go into the '95 900. My own stupidity killed the sprag on the '95.
Lesson learned, don't use a crappy battery.
I have replaced about 3 sprags on other Trophys since. It's a big job.
A few days ago I rode my '96 to Home Depot. I leave it in gear when I park it. After getting the item I needed I attempted to start it. Ignition key on, clutch pulled in, but the sidestand was still down. The engine cranked over just fine but no start, sidestand was then put up and it started right up. Now my '98 Sprint won't even turn over while in gear with the side stand down. Strange. So your last post said it was cranking over but not starting. Is the side stand plunder switch coming out when the side stand it up. Sometimes that little plunger gets stuck, there is only a small spring to push it out.
