VIN Deboggle Part II (att to anyone in the UK)

So once again I'm in a great debate with two state's DMV's trying to get my title right. The title is wrong in the fact that there should be a G, instead of a C. I can see the problem there. When I try to decode the VIN I find that a lot of contradicting information on my 1993 D1200. I know that the bike was brought to the US pre-1995. I'm kind of lost on this other than I want the letters changed to indicate the model year is right in the title. I'm starting to get worried if I can't get this issue fixed I may have a perfectly good illegal motorcycle. I mean these are not track bikes either

Care to refresh us on the whole affair, and maybe give us the VIN? (You can always change the last 3 or 4 digits to x if you don't want to give up the exact VIN.)

I'm a bit confused, as "C" denotes either 1982 or 2012, "G" is '86 or 2016, and none of those years are a match for your ride. Are you looking at the tenth digit for year? A '93 bike should have a VIN that reads something like "SMT3xxxxxPJ00xxxx" or "SMT3xxxxxPJ01xxxx". A '92 would be "SMT3xxxxxNJ00xxxx", '94 would be "SMT3xxxxxRJ0xxxxx". (I'm pretty sure the 1200s have a 3 at digit 4, but I'm curious as to whether its a 4 instead.)

(No, I still haven't found a job. Why do you ask? )

Reading the VIN right off the plate it is, "SMTTTC354CGPXXXXXX. I found somewhere that stated with UK VIN's the 11th position is the model year, which P would be a 93 using the regular system. I'm pretty much lost and still waiting for a call from Triumph to make sure this is the right VIN.

Are you sure that's the VIN? Maybe you're reading the engine number? The VIN should be on the headstock and maybe on a plate under the seat, but the engine number is not the same. (Though IIRC it's close enough to be confusing.)Anyway... I get 18 digits there, but even if that's a typo your number confuses me. Here are mine, decoded:

SMT 375DF 2 T J 037xxx <-- '96 Trident

SMT 605FS 5 4 J 183xxx <-- '04 Sprint RS

SMT = England, Triumph

375DF / 605FS = Model and trim (Trident / Sprint RS)

2 / 5 = Check digit

T / 4 = Year (1996 / 2004)

J = Factory

Last 6 = Vehicle serial number

You can see here that they had a factory code at digit 11 long before they had multiple factories, and were certainly running the standard "model year at digit 10" scheme at least as early as '96. (And if you really want to get dorky, note that my '04 model year RS was assembled in May of '03. The tenth digit is definitely *model* year.)

Maybe there are UK folks who could post up their VINs? Daytona750, maybe? I think you have the earliest bike on the board. Anybody else with a pre-'95, or any UK VIN we could see for comparison?

SMT 915RN 2 8 T 333764 - '08 Speedmaster, also Thai

SMT 502FK 3 W J 065102 - '98 T595 Daytona, made in England

SMT 380DH 2 S J 028273 - '95 Sprint

ZDM 1HB6R 3 N B 004011 - 1992 Ducati 851

ZDM 1SB5T 9 1 B 011330 - '01Ducati 996

ZDM 1LC4N 0 R B 014781 - '94 Ducati 900SS

WB1 04370 3 D 6 308000 - Listed as a 1984 BMW R100RS, but the VIN says it's actually an '83.

WB1 05360 5 R 0 301125 - '94 BMW K1100LT

JH2 RC430 3 R M 002226 - '94 Japanese Honda Magna, Hamamatsu factory

JH2 SC300 7 R N 000849 - Fails check! But, if we change the "N" to an "M" it becomes a '94 Japanese Honda CB1000 built at the Hamamatsu factory

1HF SC226 4 R A 600885 - '94 American Honda Gold Wing 1500, made in Ohio

So you can see that these numbers actually carry a meaning, and the 10th digit should be an "R" for a '94 VIN no matter where it's built.

Okay, I'm off to see if I can get a life on eBay....

Yeah that's the actual VIN, I really appreciate everyone's participation on this. Flying Custard thanks, your VIN aligns with mine except for the year. Now I have to convince the DMV that when I go to title it, it is in fact a 1993 and not an 1986 as the C would classify it in the States.

Sorry Kit, I added an extra x than I should have, it's a 17 digit number. Well atleast no I know my stuff is legit and it was personally imported to the States at some point before 2000. I really hope I can get this title issue fixed. I'm running into the problem that I'm in the military and want to register my Daytona in Pennsylvania (home) so that I never have to change states again, until I'm out of the service which is still a long way away. Thanks for everyone's help it's now a fight between Florida and South Carolina.
