it was bound to happen once, sooner or later...

never again will i be able to utter the line "i've never dropped a motorbike"

bringing the bike out of the garage at my parents house earlier this evening, rolling it backwards towards the road, as i got to the road (downward sloping drive, upward sloping camber) lost momentum and footing and fell to the left. luckily i managed three things; firstly, no one saw me! secondly, to step out away from it and not end up with a leg under it (a leg that's 5 weeks into knee-surgery recovery!), and thirdly, while i couldn't hold the weight, i did get it down as slowly as could be expected. need to have a proper look at it in the daylight tomorrow but from what i can see the only real damage was the left indicator which still works, but the plastic lens has smashed, slight scuff to one of casings, and the passenger foot peg took the rest of it quite impressively.

so, to the reason i've explained all this, besides embarrassing myself, is concerning the indicator. triumph charge about 40(!) to replace the full unit, or 7 for the plastic lens, neither of which seem like very attractive options. has anyone replaced their striple indicators with 3rd party LEDs like the numerous ones available on ebay? are they any good (cos they seem quite cheap) and are they easy to fit? or more importantly, any i should specifically avoid? also worth noting a triumph OEM single indicator can be acquired for about 17 on ebay

Make sure to get ones with a built in resistor so you don't have to mess with changing the relay or anything else. Also not to mention the chances of getting a poorly made one that includes a resistor is less likely. They may not say it has a relay but the it would say that it will work with bike without changing the relay.

I dropped my last bike when my foot slipped on gravel on the pavement; watch out for that one! I turn my bike immediately after backing it out so it is pointed to drive away. A set of 2 point frame sliders is a good investment. - Wayne

That is not that bad.

My last bike (Honda XR650L) suffered a horrible death from a fall over.
I was in a rush to get to work, pulled the bike out of my driveway, kicked out the kickstand, and turned around to close the gate.

I heard a loud CRUNCH behind be, and turned back around to the bike laying on its right side! Immediately rushed over to pick it up. When I did pick it up, the bike sprayed and coated me from shoes to hips in oil!

Apparently when the bike fell over (due to me not kicking the kickstand all the way out... till it locked), the gear shift lever bent inwards and punched a quarter sized hole in the fragile magnesium alloy stator cover.

Now I am OCD about engaging the kickstand. LOL

On more than one occasion I've walked away from my bike only to return 10 seconds later to double check the kick stand. The bike has never fallen over and I want to make sure it never does! Some people may call it OCD, I choose to call it being cautious.

If you really want to make sure it can't fall off the side stand put the bike in first gear and roll it forward until it stops so all the slack is out of the chain. The put your side stand down. Now even is the side stand is t quite all the way down it still can't roll off of it. Also keep your side stand well lubed and it will pop full down with very little effort.

atleast i'm not the only one

when i checked it the following day, as well as the lens being smashed, the reflective piece inside the indicator had smashed, mainly into large sections which were salvaged from the roadside that morning. put that back together with araldite and in the end managed to replace the plastic lens from a local triumph dealer for 7 including postage, instead of 14 direct from worldoftriumph. everything seems fine with it anyway, no problems riding or indicating!

hopefully i won't do it again, and 7 is getting off very light for such a mistake!

Good ol' Araldite. I find it keeps the wife that little bit quieter as well.
