2005 Ran out of fuel, won't restart

Just picked up a 2005 Speed Triple 1050 that has a bit of an issue. Previous owner ran it out of fuel on the road, then when they put fuel back in it, it would not start. Any ideas were to begin on diagnosis?

Part of me thinks it might have just hurt the fuel pump.

Thanks in advance,

Henry

Interesting. Maybe some crud lurking at the bottom of the tank got pulled in? You may have to pull the pump out and inspect the screen. I'd check the fuse for the fuel pump too, especially if you don't hear it prime when you turn on the ignition. Let us know what you find out.

What happens when you turn on the key (before attempting to start) - can you hear the pump whine for about 3 secs (the priming step)?
It should do that every time you turn it off/on again - or just setting the Kill/Run to Kill, then Run again.
You can check for 12V across the pump connector but remember it will be only be there for 3 seconds when you first turn it on
i.e. set probes across connector, turn ignition on (operating the Kill/Run is easier) and get 12V for 3 secs, then will go to zero - turn off/on and check again.

If you do NOT get 12V, then check
a) Fuse #4
b) The Fuel Pump Relay (swap it with the Cooling Fan Relay)

Other status questions:
Are Neutral and Oil Lights on when you turn on ignition?
Cranks OK, just does not start?

Pump is good to go now. Spark is good on all three coils/plugs. Fuel injectors are not firing upon starting.

Need to get some paper clips because my multimeter probes aren’t small enough to get to the metal parts on the connectors for the injector harness. Thoughts? The gas I drained out of the tank was NASTY to the 10th degree.

Yup, I just adopted a 2005 sprint 1050. Similar situation, this one sat for 4 years. Had to replace the pump assembly. Waiting on the fuel level sender as that’s mucked up as well. Replaced it and started up. Make sure to pull the injectors and clean them out of the gunk that passed thru. Lastly clean the rail out as well.

I’m having starting problems too, possibly fuel system related. I have a post going on about it looking for illumination.

I’m curious if you could get your bike started and add an additive to your gas like seafoam, it could maybe clear your injectors assuming they work and are just gummed up. I get my bike to start by spraying a little starter fluid in the air box.

If the spray starts it , it’s a fuel delivery issue. Start simple : filter, fuse, pump and clean tank. Check fuel rail for blockages. Nasty gas clogs everything. I just went through that when I picked up a 02 st that had been sitting awhile. Check for vacuum leaks at the throttle bodies and not plugged or cracked. I changed everything rubber and fuel fittings. It fired right up clean. It also had a pc3 which I took off since it ran like crap with it on. Under $100 for everything and about 3-4 hours of work. These bikes are so easy to work on , even a caveman can do it.

Where did you spray the starter fluid? You said your plugs have spark so you should of had some ignition. Sounds like the fluid isn’t getting to the plugs. Try opening up the top of your air box and spray directly onto the air filter. Put the top back on but don’t screw it closed. That way you’ll have easy access if/when you might need to do it again. I have my bike opened up. I’ll try taking a pic of my hoses when I get a chance.

Dump that fuel and check the filter. I got my sprint with old gas and needed quick start to get it going. Cleaned tank and new filter kabam started right up. Idled well since it hadnt been ran in quite some time.
