Planning US trip - tours/hire

Hello all,

I'm beginning planning a US tour. At the moment, I have a very vague plan to ride some of the desert states, probably finishing either in Vegas or maybe Southern California.

Right now, I'm trying to find a decent tour company or rental company. Most of the tour companies seem small and unable to do 1-way tour/hires, or on the east coast.

Eagle Rider seem to be the only game in town in the mid-west/west, but I hear really mixed reviews of their service and reliability, with many people complaining about long waits to collect, and not being given the level of bike they'd paid for.

Can anyone recommend any alternatives?

Hi,

If you are open to Vancouver BC as a start, this place is good https://vancouver.cyclebc.ca/motorcycles . In Seattle https://www.bmwmcofseattle.com/ and https://www.tourusa.us/ . https://www.riders-share.com/ is a peer to peer rental website.

It may be cheaper to ask a dealer to sell you a used bike and then guarantee to buy it back at the end of your trip for something less than purchase price.

If you decide to rent in Seattle or Vancouver I can give you some Pacific Northwest / Western Canada ride suggestions. Can say Vancouver east to Canadian Rockies, then Northwest to Bella Coola or Prince Rupert, then BC Ferry down the inside passage back to Vancouver Island, then down Vancouver Island to Victoria, is a pretty awesome ride. And worth riding out to Tofino on west coast of Vancouver Island.

Thanks for the response, but while the Northwest is, indeed beautiful, itís a very different trip - I was there recently on a car road-trip, but I really have my heart set on the deserts this time.

Riders Share is really quite pricey and they definitely can't do one-way.

No experience with (other than a google search) shows https://www.motoquest.com/motorcycle-rental-locations/

The only option would be, say, rent in San Francisco, head into the desert and return to Long Beach, CA.

How many days are you planning for your trip?

If it's a long trip it might be cheaper to buy a used bike in e.g. SF and sell it to a dealer in e.g. LA. Or leave it at a bike shop that will sell it on consignment.

Good route is north across Golden Gate, out to Sacramento via 121 and 128 through Napa and Winters. Then 50 or 88 getting to Topaz Lake in the Sierra Nevada. 395 or 338 to Lee Vining. Stay on 395 until you get to Death Valley then out to Vegas via 127 and 160. Freeway to Mojave Preserve, off the freeway and motor south to Kelso. Then down past 29 Palms (I trained at the MCAS there), then find your way to Bear Lake on 2 lane roads, then west to Hidden Springs, and down to LA via Big or Lite Tujunga Canyon Road.

Weird how close to LA you can be in empty wilderness.

Carry some water and a mobile phone.

I just rented a Triumph Tiger 800XC in Palm Springs from Eagle Rider (my bud chose a BMW GS) and it couldnít have been a better experience. Good place to start or end your trip, too!

Thanks, Iím planning on between 8 and 10 days in the saddle right now.

Purchase is an option Iíd considered, but Iíd be worried about reliability of a cheaper bike or recovery of investment from a more expensive one...

A couple things follow on from that --

Yes, take up the offer of a fellow RAT and site member. The other option, and one I've exercised buying previously is asking someone local to where you're travelling to look at a bike for you.

For only eight to ten days, the rental plan seems like the best option. I would think that buying really only gets worth it when rental comes close to the price of buying a bike outright.
