Ignition Cylinder Steering Lock -- Push?

The lock cylinder indicates it needs to be depressed in order to go from 'off' to 'lock' as is normal for most bikes I've been on.

My RS's cylinder doesn't actually need to be pushed in, making it really easy to flick over to the parking lights. I can twist from 'on' to 'lock' with little to no resistance. It CAN be pushed in the regular quarter inch or so, but that actually prevents it from turning.

Seems abnormal to me. The weather's a bit chilly here so going to the dealership is less than appealing, so I figured I'd ask here instead! Anyone else have this issue?

My R is the same way. Does seem like it shouldn't be that way. I once killed my battery when I parked my bike around noon only to come back later at night to see I'd gone all the way over to the parking lights. Real careful to check it now.

The sequence on my 13 befuddled me a bit. I was used to having to push and turn, but on this bike it seems the proper sequence is push, release, then turn.

I've mentioned this before but, the best way to turn your key to lock and be 100% sure you haven't accidentally left your parking lights on is to always turn it all the way to the stop (parking lights), then turn it back to lock.

Never once gone over to the parking light, alternatively I’ve had it frequently where I’ve tried to turn the key to engage the steering lock and it wouldn’t turn properly so the only way to solve it was to give the bars a slight nudge further to the left, almost like they needed an extra mm or 2 to allow the lock to engage properly.

I agree. Compared to my SV I really had to turn it as far to the left as I could on my 2018 STR. Works well and thanks to y’all I didn’t make the mistake of going all the way to the parking light which I don’t see a real need for. Maybe for night time photo shoots?

It was probably one of those DOT regulations that goes back to candles and oil lamps that will never change.
