Rear mudguard Speed Twin/Thruxton 1200

Hi,

Does anyone know for certain whether the standard rear mudguard assembly on the Thruxton 1200 will fit on a Speed Twin?

Having done a bit of research, I find that both bikes share basically the same frame, but that the subframe is different.

Does this mean the rear mudguards are not interchangeable?

Thanks in anticipation.

I understand the style element of the standard Speed Twin mudguard, but I just don't like it, and particularly like the standard set-up on the Thruxton 1200. I think it looks likely to do a better job of keeping muck off my back than all these tail tidies that seem to be retro fitted.
For that reason, presumably, there are a glut of them on ebay and that's what made me think it would be an ideal switch if everything lined up and it was a straight swap.
I guess I need to see both bikes in the same place or find someone in a showroom somewhere that can compare.

Just out of interest, are you still using the standard rear mudguard setup, and if so how does that perform with regard to keeping the muck off?

As stated, I get the whole style thing, but if it means the bike and you get covered in muck . . . . .

I contacted Triumph directly to ask the initial question about the rear mudguard interchangeability, but they were unable to answer.

The new Speed Twin is top of my list for next bike, but there are some things you cannot learn from a test ride.

Talking from experience and many miles in the rain the Speed Twin rear mudguard is pretty much useless. The rear seat, rear light, and all up the back of my jacket were all covered with dirt. Moving the rear plate up near the mudguard helps a good bit. If I could have found a cover for the rear part of the seat I would have bought one. I keep a Kriega bag on the back now for bits and bobs but it also keeps all the road dirt off the seat.

Thank you for that honest appraisal. Sometimes you can tell by looking at a thing that it will or won't work and that confirms what I thought. I also think the standard setup on the Thruxton 1200 looks like it will do the job better, hence the original enquiry. I guess I will just have to buy it and try it. Many thanks to everyone for your comments. Paul.

couple of things. I forgot the bracketry for the ecu is a bit different, but if your skilled enough to take a fender off it shouldn't be a problem. Second thing putting Speed 2 fenders on a Thrux R is a bit more involved. It seems all of the Speed 2 in the states got a cosmetic upgrade involving turns signals and brake light. At least mine did. It had led turn signals and the rear brake light was incorporated into the rear turn signals. In other words there is no separate tail/brake light. The turn signals have red leds that serve that purpose in addition to amber leds that serve as the turn signals. So for it to work one would need to source the stock turn signals/tail light or get a flasher that will work with leds. I not sure if the wiring harness will need modding or not. I suspect not. If you would like to see more pictures of the Thrux fender on the Speed 2 look for here

Yeah, I've got the (now discontinued) OEM fender eliminator for my Thruxton R that swapped me to LED's and changed the ECU bracket and subframe a bit. I think between my stock take-off parts and the eliminator kit, it could come together. Seems to be a good amount of sample components.
