I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an RS. I'm not a huge fan of bar end mirrors as I have a city commute through traffic some days and try to keep things as slim as possible.
I can't find any info online but does any owner know if the RS has standard mounting holes for mirrors? Anyone tried it?
I can't see how the mirrors are mounted on the current model R or S but looks like I can bodge this with the brake side clamp from a 17-19 and the clutch side from a pre-17.
If anyone is interested, looks like parts are here:
Yes, you should be able to just replace the clamp. Folks like me with an R have done the opposite: replace the mirror mount clamp with a bare clamp. The bare clamps are the same as the Daytonas from like 12+ I think. Clutch side should be the same, but I'm unsure about brake side since the RS has a different MC.
That said, can't you turn the stock bar end mirrors towards the inside? My CRG arrows allow that, though I ride with them to the outside. As Will said, the stock R mirrors are terrible, so unless you find some aftermarket ones that are better, the small amount of width saved is likely offset by less useful mirrors.
Buying the clamps would let you fit a wide choice of aftermarket mirrors but personally I wouldn't even contemplate the stock Triumph ones from R or S models: They're rubbish unless you want a good view of your elbows and the way the lens "adjusts" in the plastic mirror body is primitive & insufficient.
I’ve got a set of Rizoma mirrors on the Bonnevile that I really get on with. I’m reverting to stock and part exchanging for the Street Triple so wanted to transfer them over if possible. If not, they’ll go on eBay with the rest of the bits and pieces I added to the Bonnie.
Thanks for the heads up on the stock S / R mirrors!
Got some clamps that work well (ended up picking up some from Rizoma which work great).
Of course, there's another hurdle. Pulling off the OEM bar end mirrors and finishing cap revealed a threaded post / insert sticking out the end of the bar that I'm not sure is removable. I have some bar end weights already that I wanted to use but they're the expanding rubber fitment type so need a hollow bar.
Do you know what this part is (I can't find a reference online) and if it's removable? You can see the wiring for the heated grips in the picture so that might cause problems with a push fit anyway. If not, any recommendations for bar ends? Would be great to not have the gap as well between the end of the grip and the bar end.
Ah yes, went though this myself. It’s a clever setup triumph has there but it does limit one’s mirror options if you want to use heated grips as well. Heated grips were important to me so I left that piece inside the bar. I had a nice set of motivation weighted bar end/mirror mounts that couldn’t be used, I was bummed.
I ended up installing CRG Arrow bar-end mirrors on what left of the bar extending past the grips. You could then screw the caps back on but I ended up using sliders instead. Works for me.
