'13 D675R Downshift Problem

Hi Guys,

Went for a ride this weekend and ran into an issue with my 675R.

Came to a light riding around 60mph in 6th gear and the bike started to have issues downshifting. It initially got stuck in 5th gear and forced me to clutch in and coast to a stop at the light.

While I was stopped, the gear indicator remained in 5th gear as I had my clutch in and tried to downshift. Must have kicked down around 12 times before the bike allowed me to downshift. Has not happened to me since then. I hope it was just me not kicking down hard enough, but it sure did seem like I was.

Also not sure if it helps but prior to getting to the light and coming to a stop, I had given the bike some throttle and got the bike up to ~100 in 6th using the quick shifter at about 7k RPMs each gear before coming back down to ~60 mph and cruised at 60 for a good half mile.

Never happened to me before. Bike has less than 1300 miles on it; it is the '13 current gen R model.

Not sure if this is a known issue as I was not able to find my issue via my search abilities.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Have you changed the oil since you owned it? Old/dirty oil will cause some shifting problems in some bikes. Also, if it hasn't happened again, it may have just been one of those things. If it keeps happening, you may have bent a shift fork or done something similar. You shouldn't have to pound on the shifter to get it to shift.

It's a squid thing. You wouldn't understand.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

I had changed the oil w/ Motul 5100 about 30 miles before this occured.

Hoping for user error here. Haven't had time to ride it since this weekend, will take it out this Saturday if weather permits.

Might check your clutch lever adjustment to make sure the clutch is fully releasing.

Did this start suddenly?

The 13+ models had a problem with the pivot plate that caused issues with up and down shifting. Triumph was replacing the shift pivot plate and star under warranty ... which I'm assuming you're now out of ;-)

Should be able to get a kit from the dealer, or aftermarket online.

This may help as well. I remember guys having good success with improved shifting after installing the sato spindle holder ... but i can't say for sure if it also resolved the up/downshift issues.

It has only happened that one time. I've ridden maybe ~100 miles since it occured. Have not been able to reproduce the problem so far. *knock on wood*

2017 675r new purchase 2018.

at around 400 miles on the bike stopped at a light, was in 5th tried to down shift, nothing. let out the clutch lever a bit then i was able to get to 1st.
today 5-28-19 at 4014 miles on the bike exact same thing.

under warranty still, just worried the dealer is going to tear into my bike and make things worse.

Were you trying to downshift when coming to a stop? Or did you stay in 5th with the clutch in until you came to a stop?

If it was the latter, then my Speed Triple tranny does the same sometimes if I have to come to an emergency stop and do not downshift. I just have to roll a bit forward or engage the clutch a tad bit to be able to downshift.

Would definitely take it in while under warranty if 1.) the same issue continues to recurr and 2.) you are able to re-enact the event. Also would help if you have a good reputable shop. I have had sub-par experiences with my local triumph dealers and now opt to drive out 50 miles to a more remote shop.
