1979 triumph T140D headers

Can I install headers from a 1969 Triumph to a 1979 Triumph T140D Special?

Hi,

I've moved this to the main Classic, Vintage & Veteran forum (from CVV Photos ...), where more people will read it.

Not without fitting spigots to the T140 head - headers push into a T140D head, over spigots screwed into a '69 head.

Hth.

Stuart

Regards,
I have what was an original 79 T140D...It has screw in spigots just like the 650's...The header collector fits close to the right lower frame rail.. The 650 engine is a bit taller so the header could foul the frame....Or not....

Second fastest Triumph..............land speed racing....dressed in animal skins clinging to oily vibrating machines propelled by fire..

Ok Thank you, I'll just probably buy headers for the T140.

You have been quiet for a while.

You can use the earlier pipes but they WILL FOUL on the Timing Side foot peg and possibly the kickstart lever assembly, at least that has been my experience. If I remember there was a small problem also with the pipe length. Not the best solution.

You want to use the exhaust pipes that fit a 750 Twin from 1981-1983 they used the same screw in spigots the '69 did. AS I don't know what your plans are (such as converting to a full T140V or E system) I am not listing parts numbers. But BE AWARE you may foul both the center stand and side stand as they were exclusive to the T140D. The center stand had ,I believe, a shorter side foot bracket so it may hit the pipe/muffler. I don't remember the difference on the side stand.

Hi Kaduts,

Thanks for the reply, yes I have been doing home projects and took a break from my Bonneville. Well This summer I was thinking to switch from 2 into one exhaust to 2 into 2 exhaust and there was a guy selling his headers from his 69 Bonneville for an affordable price and was thinking to buy them but was unsure.

Just me but I wouldn't use the pipes in the picture on your machine. First straight pipes in E.Park or Chicago may get you in a heep of trouble. Second open pipes will affect your carbs.

I don't know if you are aware there was a UK model T140D that used the UK Tank,Seat, and Exhaust System off the T140. I ASSUME that model also used the standard T140V/E center & side stands. Never been able to get a Parts Book for that bike.

Now ifin it was me I would be using the earlier mentioned pipes with T120 style mufflers. Just my taste. Your machine do as you see fit.

Hey I forgot to mention August 18 (Sunday) at MCC in Villa Park the Chicago Norton Owners Club will be having it's 28th annual bike show. You should bring your bike out to show it. Only a couple of dollars for an entry fee. Or at least come over for the show Free to get in. You might get a couple of ideas.

I have been at every show but one and you never know what/who will show up there.

Yes you are right about the open pipes but I would not do that they are loud. I was going to install the Dunstall mufflers if the headers were right or the T120 were great too.

That would be great I'm not sure what time I will be getting off work but it will definitely be worth a try to go there and I will bring the bike as well so I can show you, you seem to have a lot of experience with the T140s. Thanks for the update .
