More information please:-

. As "Tritn Thrashr" asked, "Rich at what throttle opening?" - it depends whether the carb. is running on needle jet, slide cutaway or main jet. If you don't know, mark the twistgrip housing with something you can see riding and mark the twistgrip beside it corresponding to 1/4-, 1/2-, 3/4- and wot, do some plug chops and, if the plugs are still showing rich, post the throttle opening you were using.

. "they are 5mm shorter" - what are 5mm shorter? The carb. bodies from inlet mounting to top?

. What plugs are you using?

. "boyer mk2 ignition" - do you actually mean the very common "MicroMark III" (3)? "Mark II" (2) hasn't been available since God was a lad.

Regards,

Stuart

hi it is a mk3 boyer my mistake, at the moment ngk bores plugs but also champion n3, the needle jet is 5mm shorter than the ones in my old amals but not sure even if those are right ,will double check with amal , been having another look and the main jet is 200 so I will fit 190s as it should be, also found a pilot jet wasn't in all the way, will mark the throttle as you've said, thanks

You need to start by tuning the main jet, only once that is right can you start on the rest. Before you swap the main jets mark the throttle and go for a ride to warm the engine. The main jet comes into play at 3/4 throttle and above so when you reach this throttle opening one of three should happen.

1. The bike continues to pull clean and strong.

2. The bike runs out of puff and does not speed up as you open the throttle wider, yet will speed up when you back the throttle off slightly.

3. The bike will eight stroke. Essentially this means that you miss a firing cycle and the bike behaves like it's misfiring. You will understand if it happens.

If No.1. The main jet is likely about right.

If No.2. The main jet is lean. Increase main jet size until the bike eight strokes and then fit a jet two sizes smaller.

If No.3. The main jet is rich. Reduce main jet size until eight striking stops and go one size smaller.

Go to the Amal website and down load their tuning guide.

thanks for the info , also downloaded the amal tips, it's struggling between 1/4 -1/2 throttle, closed the air choke a bit and it picked up better

Do you know that making the choke lever pull the cable is putting the choke off?

If so, try the needle in a richer position. It doesn’t cost anything.

Just want to back up what Red said.
You need to work on WOT settings first. Handy if you have a steep hill nearby. It is better to test this way, than read the plugs.
Reading plugs is for fine tuning at the track, on any given day.
