Your reasoning is sound and I agree. I think electric vehicles some day will
work but I don't believe they will in a rural environment any time in the near future.
I have a friend who owns a Tesla, one of the earlier really fast ones. He lives in
Cincinnati which is about 65 miles from here. He's only driven it here one time. That
was last Winter. There is a big highway called the AA Highway that comes from
Cincinnati to here. When he arrived, we drove it down the runway a few times. That
sucker was really, really fast ! However, after the 3rd trip down the runway (5000 ft.),
he said, "man, we gotta quit this I'm running out of juice!" I said, "What?". He told
me to look at the meter on the dash. He said he would be lucky to make it back home.
The car was fully charged when he left home and he said this was the longest trip he'd made!
Now, he did say he got in a short race with a BMW on the AA Highway but just for a few
minutes. He mentioned he would have a headwind going home and that he had been
using the heater and the wipers a lot. Well, I found out later that he limped home nearly out of
power. How's that for an 85K auto? The range Tesla advertises is in perfect conditions,
level roads, and minimal use of heating and A/C. Now, back to the Live Wire, advertised
range is 110 miles. How long does it take to rack up 110 miles in a rural area just putting
around. Not long...,and, it's a motorcycle, how many times are you going to show off
that amazing acceleration, come on, tell the truth ! Your 110 mile range will end up
being around 75 if you're lucky. Then, what do you do? Coast to the side of the road?
I just don't understand todays' generation that can't wait 0.2 of a second for a text to go
through, buying a 30K bike and then happily waiting hours for it to charge to get on down
the road. Am I wrong? Maybe so. "My mind's wide open Luther !"
