I have a 2002 T100 that makes a loud metallic-sounding clanking sound when I shift into 1st gear from neutral. It gets better as the bike warms-up. Oil type & level is correct. Any ideas as to the source?
Are you sure you'r not talking about the Harley? If not it could be too high idle, clutch adjustment(too much free play) or one week or broken clutch spring.
Idle is bang-on @ 1100. Free play adjusted properly and there is a relatively fresh set of Barnett green springs installed. This sounds like metal plate being banged on and ringing. My other Bonnie's (and Harley) do not make such a noise.

as the engine is cold, of course the oil too is cold and much thicker than when at normal operating temps. this allows the clutch plates to grab each other and slowly spin around thus creating the "clunk" when going from neutral to first gear. sometimes you can feel it want to lurch forward. if you have a centre stand and try it you will see the wheel spin even when the clutch is pulled in
even though we use multigrade engine oils, it is still thicker at cold temps and thins out at normal temps. the change in viscosity is simply not as great if it were a mono oil
personally, I like the clunk. sounds tuff :laugh2:

my 2012 t100 also do that, i think it is the chain knocking on the chainguard, i might have some links in my chain that are seized , i will replace it next spring and see if it fix it.
Bonza, I think you're right about it being the clutch plates. My finely-tuned Audiophile ears tell me it's a resonating metal surface, the clutch plates being the likely culprits. I always replace the oil before Winter storage. I think I might do that a little early this year to see if it makes a difference.
Went to change the oil only to find I was about a 1/3 of a liter low. I topped-off the oil and the loud clanking is subdued. I also found my centerstand very loose, although that had nothing to do with the excessive noise.
My t100 has always made a metal clunk going into first. Kinda like someone tapping the engine case with a small hammer. I think it's a normal behaviour of these tranny's....basically the gear dogs engaging when they need to mesh a bit. My '74 Norton Commando gearbox (4 speed) shifts extremely smoothly compared to my 2013 Bonneville. But the Bonneville is a completely different design and much more robust overall.
My FZ09 makes quite a heavy thump going into first, so much so, that if I can remember, I slip the bike into first before thumbing the start button (clutch in of course)
Oh, did you find where the oil went? or was it just sitting safely in a jug on a shelf?
