hi all, had a little drop, and the right side mirror popped off! it appears to be designed to break away from the bar end caps. But i have a hard time reattaching them. There’s a spring to keep tension on the bolt but it’s practically impossible to compress it enough for the threads to catch.
Here's the schematic. You can see see the components retaining the mirror arm in the handlebar end. Sounds like the bolt has broken, as Forchetto has suggested. When removing the remainder of the bolt, carefully remove the circular compression collar (part 29, referred to as the tolerance ring) that retains the arm in the end of the handlebar, allowing it to rotate. Then you can replace the mirror itself.
actually it’s the mirror assembly itself that has come apart. part 28. the barend is still on the bar.
i went to compare the left side mirror which was still attached. the bolt holding the mirror to the bar end only needed to be loosened about half a turn before the mirror was released from the bar end. a thick tensioning spring and 2 washers accompanied the bolt retaining the mirror to the bar end.
now i can’t get it back on. the spring is impossible to compress enough for the bolt threads to catch.
Ok. I think I understand. I remember it was a challenge to reinstall the mirror stalks on the bar ends when I flipped my handlebars and had to remove and reinstall both, otherwise the mirrors would have been upside down, although some prefer to ride with them that way.
The mirror stem is difficult to get back in the bar end with the retaining circular collar spring thingy (part 29), but it is possible if you start at one end and gently work it into the bar end. Introduce the mirror stalk when the collar is about one third in, making sure they overlap so the pressure gradually increases as you seat it. Very difficult to explain, but hopefully you get the idea. I remember one side was more difficult than the other. Didn't use any, but a small amount of lubricant may help with this.
Careful as you work on this as part 29 can come apart, requiring replacement.
Yes, it's really a sprung collar or insert that compresses very slightly to accept and retain the mirror stem. If you don't first overlap the stem a bit when first inserting, it won't allow the stem to enter it as you tighten the bolt down, or even allow you to grab the bolt threads. Keep trying.
If you are really stuck, consider carefully dismantling the other mirror to determine exactly how it all goes together. Study the schematic too!
anybody have a set of OEM thruxton mirrors you're not using anymore?
