Thruxton tire confirmation

Hello,

I’m hoping to get some confirmation from someone who has changed the tire size and kept stock wheels on a Thruxton 900.
I intend to replace both tires this weekend and it seems that some folks have mounted 110/80/18 up front and 150/70/17 in the rear on the stock spoked wheels with no issues. Can someone confirm that this combo works well on a Thruxton (stock sizes are F 100/90/18 & R 130/80/17)?

I called my local Triumph shop today to arrange the mounting and they warned me that they never heard of anyone going with that tire size. Their concern had me doubting what info I’ve picked up online since I don’t actually know anyone who is riding with this set up.

Will changing to this size cause any safety issues, or is it just simply not a popular thing to do since the bike handles well as is and that size bumps the cost per tire up?

I am considering the Continental Road Attack 3s, and mostly interested in the aesthetics of a 150 rear tire over the 130. I have read about slower turning which doesn’t seem like it will bother me on these flat Florida roads. Thanks for any advise you can offer.

Thruxrider, I have that exact setup on my Bonneville (practically a Thruxton at this point, except for the rear suspension). Attached are some pics. Don't really have a shot directly from behind showing the width of the rear tire but can grab one later if you like.

When I fitted them I also installed and Outex tubeless kit. These were the first set of tires I've ever done myself and they were quite difficult. Some across the web claim that RA3s carcass is very stiff and this is compounded by squeezing oversized tires onto the stock wheels. Probably not an issue if you're having a pro do it though.

Thruxrider,

For my 2013 I went with the sizes you specified, only with Pirelli. Also went tubeless. My experience and impressions is provided with some detail in the link below.....

After a solid summer season of riding, still no regrets. Assuming you are still on the original OEM's you will find a considerable improvement in handling and ride comfort. Surprised at your dealers discouraging remarks on the up-sizing. Pretty standard and was the stock set up by Triumph for Thruxton road racing some years ago.

Good luck, ride safe, Thruxty.

I changed from the stock tires to Michelin Pilot Road 3 150/70ZR17 in rear and Michelin Pilot Road 3 110/80ZR18 in front and it it was a big difference from the stock tires. The bike tuns a lot faster it became so easy to handle, I bought the bike used so I don't know what it was when the stock tires was new but the tire change was very positive.

Thruxrider, if you want to increase the speed of turn-in drop the forks in the yokes a couple of millimeters. Lowering the front end increases turn in speed, but be careful not to overdo it and get an unwelcome surprise. Your Michelin's look good. Glad they are working out for you!
