Aren't there a ton of kits out there to do this for relatively low cost?
I'm struggling to find a decent small rear fender that goes on as easily as I want something but not the gigantic thing that came stock.
That would certainly work. I had to do that with my old Suzuki. I was just hoping for something a little more bolt on. I believe Motone and Baak make options.
Take a look at my post (7/20/2019) along with others at the above thread. I had acquired the bike with a tail tidy but was getting seriously spattered when riding on wet surfaces.
If you care about getting spattered leave the OEM set up alone for best results. If you don't mind some spattering (or you're a fair weather rider) try fabricating something to provide some protection, as you will get caught sooner or later, as I did! As with you, I wanted to retain a tail tidy, not realizing the adverse consequences. I fashioned a rubber mudflap securing it under the number plate as shown in the picture/thread. A reasonable compromise I think. Continuing to ride as shown for now!
Thanks for that, interesting thread and food for thought. My Bonneville arrived 1 hour ago and after a very quick appraisal, I have a list of works to get it road worthy again. Most important is bent gear shifter shaft. Some paint on front fender, instrument mounting plate is damaged, flattened exhaust front pipe, indicator lens, mirrors scratched, front brake lever. I'm very happy with it, all chrome looks good, with a little light rust on front rim which looks like it will polish out.
Yea cutting the stock down and just making a simple L bracket looks really nice. I was thinking about getting one of these trydeal.com fender eliminators / flipper gadgets maybe:
