Removing rear brake disc

Trying to remove rear brake disc so I won’t damage it when replacing wheel bearings. Any suggestions on how to remove chrome bolt caps? Can’t seem to get a screwdriver in there to pry them up, and don’t want to damage disc.

I'd consider leaving the rotor on if possible, but I haven't replaced wheel bearings so I don't know if that is feasible. Those bolts are hard to get out, and will have to be replaced.

I don't have those caps, but obviously the only way to get them off is to pry them off.

Those are the same as the plastic caps in my photo. I don't have them either, but are common used to finish cap screws. They are a push fit. Shouldnt really be a problem removing them. You will mess them up a little and should be able to shove a flat bladed screwdriver in there with out contacting the disc. They are relevantly not expensive to replace with new ones or just reuse them.

Hope you dont mind me saying, but I do wonder if you are having troubles with these caps if you have the tools required and the necessary wrenching knowledge to swap out the wheel bearings.

Good luck with the bearings. The first time I did mine, they were a real bugger to get out.

Hard to tell from photo, but disc looks scored. If so you should seriously consider replacing along with new pads. Otherwise you will progressively impair braking efficiency.

I picked up a set of picks (like those used by dentists). Amazing how many times they have been useful tools. Try them if still looking to remove the caps. Used on my handlebar risers successfully. While the caps are cosmetic, they do keep the allen bolt head recesses clean.
