Thanks for the advice everyone. What I ended up doing is pulling off the shifter and moving it two teeth up, this allowed enough room for my riding boots but not high enough to where down shifting would be cumbersome... Haven't ridden it yet though, I'll let you know after I ride this weekend how things work out. I hope I don't have to get rid of the boots, they are very comfortable, River Road double zipper Field boots is what they are.
If this doesn't work is there a good heel toe shifter option?
