I am now on my fifth rear, and third front tire.
I have gone through two Metzelers, but changed both before their time (the first due to a long trip I was about to take that I knew the tire would not last through, and the second at the very end of that trip due to a large puncture)
I went through a Bridgestone after that, which I DO NOT recommend. I got 5500 miles out of it and it was DONE. I never felt truly comfortable on the tire either.
The next was a Dunlop Roadsmart, which quite frankly I loved. Dual compound, so dazco's words above apply, and I got 7,700 miles out of them before it was time to change, and that was with a nail that I picked up at around 3k miles!
Now I am running Avons front and rear... haven't quite decided yet as I do not really have any mileage on them (a whole 50 miles so far). Once I have gotten through them, I will have a good idea of what tire to go with for my riding style and stick with it at that point.
