So I will be picking up my 2017 T120 Jet Black in the next week or so weather depends ding and it brings me to a very important question. What are the must have accessories I should consider adding before the ride home? I know one will be a pair of chrome dresser bars. I laid my 06 T100 down a few years ago on some gravel and the dresser bars took the brunt of the punishment. Well that and my wrist. Saved the tank from any damage. Only a scrape on the pirfors and exhaust. Well I needed to put in a new spindle shaft for the gear shift, but, overall not a super expensive repair. What else should I consider right out of the gate. This is my first ever brand new bike, super excited.
This is my vote also. As a matter of fact, it was the ONE thing that convinced me to get the bike. I like most everything about this bike, but if no CC had been available, I would not have bought one.
1. Dresser bars.
2. Get rid of the Mickey Mouse ears and get some good looking after-market mirrors.
3. A good screen to reduce buffeting on the chest at speed.
Later:
4. Think about a new rear sprocket.
5. Detachable luggage
I thought that a back rack and a 12v accessory outlet (for heated vests and such) were necessities on my new bike. I am not overly pleased with Triumphs back rack from a functionality standpoint, but it works and it fits. The 12v accessory plug was well worth the few bucks it cost.
A 39 or 41 tooth rear sprocket does sound like a good idea. The bike comes overgeared. It is on my list of things to do to my bike.
I bought some 1" mirror extenders from Amazon. That made a substantial difference in the usability of the rearview mirrors.
Triumph, in my opinion, doesn't offer any decent windscreens. I bought a Street Shield EX from National Cycle that I really like. But the style is personal preference.
I bought aftermarket soft tankbag, tail bag and saddle bags. Again. I didn't like anything Triumph offered; too expensive and too limited in function. I actually ended up getting two tank bags, a small one for everyday use and a large one for touring.
Plan on replacing the stock headlight bulb with an aftermarket bulb if you want a decent high beam.
All in all, the T120 is an excellent motorcycle. I have zero regrets about buying one. I am sure you will love it.
Depending on where you ride, you may want to add a sump guard, the OEM one protects effectively, including the cat canister and the bit holding the kickstand spring that has been such a hassle to some.
The bike came standard with about the only accessories that I cared about, the low grab bar and center stand. I did add the cruise control, mostly because it could be done. I find that it's very useful.
1. Changed the fork oil from stock to 5w, easy and cheap and made a big difference and is just right, compliant with control
2. The 39T rear sprocket is a must have, period
3. The reverse cone pipes from Cone Engineering made a big difference in the character and powerband of the engine, it doesn't choke above 4.5k rpm anymore and has a much more lively feel now. This is not a must have, but one of the things that really improved the bike.
4. Triumph comfort seat, a must have for me. The stock seat grows old after about 30 minutes
5. Upgraded the headlight bulb to a H4 55/100 bulb. Cheap and easy, makes a big difference in the high beam
6. The power socket is reasonably priced and very useful.
The other stuff I've done that are optional and based on useage/likes.
7. Dart Marlin screen. I'm currently in the market for something with better protection, the wind blast is getting old on this bike
8. Rear tail rack with a Wolfman Peak tailbag, decent place to put a few items
9. Back rest for wifey. It's easy to mount/dismount as needed 4 bolts
10. Bar end mirrors. I tried some cheapos, like bar end vs stock, but upgrading to Thruxton stock bar end mirrors now
11. Street Twin footpegs and levers to move my feet back and up to change the angle of my hips/butt on the seat
12. I am upgrading the front brake rotors to Thruxton R rotors to reduce weight in the front wheel which is heavy as sh... They are cheaper than all the aftermarket ones and look the part.
13. I have a set of Hagon 2810 adjustable shocks on order. The stock rears are just barely passable, they don't have enough dampening so you get the pogo stick.
I'm very happy with the bike overall. I'd really love a set of alloy tubeless rims one day. I will probably look into some soft luggage/tank bag at one point or see about mounting some I have already. But the next thing will be a better windscreen.
Thank you for the continued suggestions. I have an additional week to think about it due to a mix up at the dealer. They were sent a T120 Black instead of the T120 in Jet Black I ordered. They are delivering it to me next week and I have a Tiger Explorer as a loaner toy to keep me busy.
Upgraded the engine and sprocket covers to chrome, including the inspection covers. Swapped out the top bar clamp to the cnc Triumph clamp and the front brake reservoir cover. Lastly, I added a Dart Classic screen to reduce some of the wind blast. I'll post some pics when I figure out how. I think the chrome covers really set the bike off.
I've done the deed today and bought a new T120 Black.Collect in at the weekend.
The dealer had a set of USA spec Vance and Hines exhausts with the removable db killers and he did me a good deal so I bought them as well and they will be fitted ready for collection.
Another black bike in the garage to go alongside it's bigger mate !!
If you are riding anywhere else than the superslab, you may want to consider the sump guard.
It is not one inch lower than the bare frame but it does a good job protecting the cat converter and the kickstand spring retaining bolt, a more important and more exposed bit than it may seem.
And if you spend any time in town or two-up, be sure to consider a larger rear sprocket (some of us found a 39T to be just perfect).
1. Cruise control
2. Sump guard
3. Windscreen
4. Still looking for a low backrest for my wife. The Triumph one is too tall, and looks like dog crap.
5. I also added the Triumph teardrop panniers. They don't look that great, but are surprisingly practical, and go on and off in a snap. (Nothing like the ones on my old 2011 T100.)
done:
1) Dart classic screen (previously from my scrambler)
2) cheap round 3" bar end mirror
3) changed heated grips to the brown OEM fat grips (to match seat)
4) black barends
5) OEM comfort seat
6) OEM engine bottom side case protector
7) Evotech radiator, sump, engine bobbins guards
8) Street scrambler OEM headlight guard
9) GIVI classic side saddle bags w rack
10) OEM shorty LED signal lights
11) Philips LED H4 bulb
12) Hagon rear shocks (previously from my scrambler)
tats all for now, quite satisfied w the ride.
planning:
- custom made straight thru pipes w O2 sensor delete.
- a bigger screen for longer dist rides
One more word for the Triumph sump guard. I changed oil yesterday to discover that my OEM bash plate took quite a beating. The rear of the plate is mounted on a bracket, which looked a bit contrived at first, but now I see the brackets took the bending effort off the frame, and probably saved it.
Great stuff here. I love seeing what every one else's recommendations are. I'm in the market for a T120. Coming from a bagger, I want some form of bags (they are handy), especially with the bike being my main ride to/from work. I just need to find some that look good on the bike. Love the bar end mirrors and +1 on the dart fly screen. Had one on a previous bonnie, just the right amount of protection from the wind and keeps with the looks of the bike.
My previous bike was a 2012 Bonneville SE. Great motorcycle, but I always wished it had better seat, better shocks, better instrumentation, ABS, sixth gear, heated grips, center stand. (I upgraded the first two.) My new t120 has all of those, and then some. Hmm... maybe a nice 5.1 sound system for the tv? Some new granite kitchen counters?
Seriously, you’ll probably want some sort of luggage. Maybe a tailbag for longer day trips, maybe a duffle or panniers for multi day trips. Enjoy the new ride!
Waxed cotton/leather Triumph bags - Fiddly and low capacity for sure, but just enough space for what I need and the look is classic. Don't forget to buy the condoms for a rainy day. They should come with the bags Triumph. C'mon.
Thruxton bar end mirrors - Did this last fall. Should have done them the day I bought the bike a year before. I can now see behind me. And they look good.
Dart flyscreen - Helps a bit. Maybe. Looks cool with the bags and mirrors. That's something...
:agree
The problem with the rain covers is that water kicked up by the back tire finds it's way onto the uncovered backs of the bag. That water ends up pooling between the bottom of the bags and the inside of the covers.:|
