Street Twin Fuel Cap Rattle

Has anyone else notice that the fuel cap on the street twin rattles while going over speed bumps and rough patches.

This happened to me only once. It turned out that I hadn't screwed it back on all the way. Still locked with the key but allowed a small amount of movement. Just unlocked it and turned it until it clicked, then locked it again and continued on my way.

The Street Twin shares the same lockable fuel cap with the T120 & T100. The outside portion of the cap spins and feels lose on the inner portion when the cap is locked. This is by design. The good news is that the threaded portion seats tightly, doesn't leak, and doesn't move when the cap is locked. The outer part of the cap does not contact any paintwork so it's doing no damage.

I really like the cap, even though it requires two hands to operate and the key can't be removed when it's unlocked. It looks right, it seems to be of very high quality, and the key slot is neatly hidden. I guess the good news is that it's pretty much impossible to forget to install the cap before you ride away from a gas pump.

As far as the cap rattling goes, I'm sure it must be, but the bike is otherwise so loud that I can't hear the gas cap moving around through my earplugs.

thanks for the reply guys. i like the new lockable fuel cap and all the advantages it brings.

its just that the rattle sound has always bothered me since it got the bike and i used to think it that something is not quite right around the triple tree / head stock area.

having finally figured out the source of it i am much at ease. while its something i can easily live with is there any easy way of eliminating the vertical play / damping the rattle sound?

@Delta sorry seems like i missed your reply by a few mins.

i can try recording something with my phone as i don't own an action cam. idk how useful it would be though. the vertical play in the fuel cap can be checked at standstill.

Not on a Triumph, but I've had gas cap rattles on other bikes. On one it was the protective flap over the keyhole, its rivet was not tight enough and in the other one it was the ball valve they sometimes incorporate inside the cap. The little ball was rattling in sympathy with certain engine revs.

perhaps you may try fitting a rubber band around the upper part, to keep it from moving up and down, for lack of a perfectly sized rubber o-ring?
