Triumph Phuket, Thailand

Taking a hiatus from Colorado winter (it's actually total riding weather there right now..., go figure...), in Thailand for a bit. Riding through Chalong, I pass a Triumph dealer. They are closed, but went back when opened. Surprised to hear they sell so many bikes (a 135cc scooter is plenty on these roads!)

I bought my T120 from Triumph Phuket.
Excessive tax on large motorbikes and a hugely excessive tax on anything not assembled here, makes Triumph a good deal in Thailand. There are plenty on the road in Phuket and Phang Nga and even 3 here in Krabi.
Everything in my first 10 months of ownership fine and the dealer has been good - but expect zero recalls as the dealers here usually wait for you to bring it in or do it at the next service.

Heading to Krabi next few days, meeting with friend (fellow cyclists) in Koh Jum.

Scooters are so much easier to ride here in crazy traffic than would be a Triumph I'd think (being the owner of three Triumphs and an array of Enfields and dirtbikes, all in the US).

My Uncle lives in Phuket and tells me Triumph is very popular out there. It seems strange. I never saw one when I was there and felt that the tiny banged up scooter I rented was plenty feisty for the roads (even going up Buddha Hill).

I wonder if they carry price premium over there. Cars are incredibly expensive in Thailand!

I believe (having lived in Thailand for over a decade), that your uncle is right. Vehicles don't depreciate anywhere near as quickly 'in the west' . Most 'big bike' owners have a scooter for shopping and getting around town.

Can't compare with knowledge gained from living there but I have enjoyed travelling throughout Thailand a bunch of times over the years and riding bikes there. When I hear Samui and Phuket I time travel and get nostalgic, because that was paradise once. Being 22 at the time added to the strong impression. I haven't been back to Phuket since '82, and when I returned to Chaweng in '89, it was painful. That's what westerners do right? Find somewhere special, fek it up, move on to somewhere else, repeat. Reminds me of the PJ O'Rourke line about overpopulation: "Way too many of you, just enough of me."

Very true. Been living here for 12 years now, had around 4 trips to Samui and each time, it got worse or I was unlucky?? Cannot comment about Phuket.

Although void of beaches, Northern Thailand is ‘still’ a bikers heaven IMO with tons of empty roads /places to visit. The roads have improved a lot and I wish I could say the same for the standard of drivers.
