I installed the long haul windscreen this morning and here are the photos. I'm 5'10' and I can see over the screen. I haven't gotten out for a ride yet as the weather is lousy. But I like the coverage of the screen. It's wider and goes down lower. I had the Dart Marlin on the bike and it wasn't giving me enough coverage on the highway. I'll post a report when I get out tomorrow.
Nice. How was the installation compared to the Dart? The Marlin was dead simple to install for me. But same issue, not quite enough wind protection for longer rides on the freeway.
Installation is not as easy as the Dart. The screen is attached to supports that are screwed into the top yoke and the fork frame behind the rectifier. Took my time and one and a half hour to install.
I'll be interested to see what you think of the airflow. I have the tall summer screen on my street twin & it does take some of the pressure off my chess at highway speeds but I don't think I'd like to ride very far or in cold weather with it.
Finally got out for a ride to test my longhaul screen. Triumph did it correct this time. The screen works well. I was on the highway at 80 mph and I had no helmet buffeting. There was a lack of wind on my legs due to the fact that the screen mounts down below the headlight. Also with the width of the screen there was no wind on my chest but there was good air flow. This is a game changer for me because I do a good amount of highway riding. Much better than the Dart screen. Plus, there was good airflow behind the screen at slower speeds. I'm 5'10" so judge for yourself.
Wow that's not a quick or easy install, is it. Making the option of going with National's handlebar mounted screen a lot more attractive. The Dart screen install takes 5 minutes, two bolts and done. I can see wanting to switch, occasionally, the Triumph screen doesn't seem designed for an easy swap.
That would be ideal, best of both worlds, but in its absence I think I am going to have to go this option as early morning commutes just get unpleasant in winter !
My dealer told me he installed 3 without the trim kit without any issue yet.
Anyone else installed and rode with this windscreen? can you give your impression of wind protection & turbulence? I am 5"2" would the screen be too tall for me to see above it? I was also waiting for the quick release but really do not like doing long ride with just the "tall summer screen" that is not tall at all... With fall coming soon I think I will go for this one if it is not too tall
Did something change on the headlight/forks between 2008 and 2009 that would make it not fit? I mean, what does fuel injection have to do with windshield compatibility? Also, are these Triumph screens acrylic or polycarbonate?
I currently have the tall summer screen on my T120. I'm considering something a bit larger for city use (lots of freeway miles, here,) and would also like to swap with a full-size highway screen for two-up travel.
Two choices I'm considering are National Cycle's Street Shield and Plexifairing GT.
The Street Shield looks in photos to be about halfway between the two Triumph Shields, and a bit larger and more upright than the Marlin.
The Plexifairing GT is listed for T100 (assuming air-cooled version) not T120, but somone in another thread here said it works great on his T120.
Looking at their mounting setup, I believe it may be possible for both NC screens to use the same hardware. It seems similar to the Tracy fairing I had on another bike which, while not technically quick-release, was fairly easy to remove and re-mount.
If anyone has pics of the Truimph touring Shield mounted, I'd love to see them.
I have National's Plexifairing GT screen on my T120. First, it does a great job buffeting the wind. Second, it's quick release so it comes on and off in minutes. Although, and this is a big downside in my opinion it looks non retro or classic. Now that's my opinion. I'love probably wait until Triumph comes up with a quick release system on a long haul screen.
Here are pictures of the touring windshield. This is not my bike, but a used one at my dealer. Unfortunately, they sold it before I had a chance to "test ride" the shield. The mounting is extremely sturdy, that shield is not going to go anywhere.
I mounted the Triumph Touring screen on my 120 last Fall but only got a few hundred miles in before weather got me. I road enough to realize the screen was not everything I wanted in and of itself so I added the MRA X-creen Touring Clamp-On Variable Windscreen. (Twisted Throttle, $160). I would rate the performance of the Touring screen by itself a 5 out of 10. Adding the Variable X-creen moved it to a good 8 out of 10. This rating scale is what my opinion is of how it works relative to my expectations of using my T120 for some touring this summer. I road 200 miles today and the wind was <10mph and it was a joy to ride, even up to Interstate speeds, (80mph) here. Yes, you're going to have some wind noise....(it's a motorcycle), but there was no buffeting and I could ALWAYS hear my motor, that's important to me. I'm 5'10", wear a full face helmet with earplugs, sit up straight, and always want to look over the shield in front of me. I can tell you that the direction the wind is coming from plays a big role in the effectiveness of ANY sizable windscreen. Taking 20 mph on the nose is waaayyy better than 10 mph in a quartering headwind. NO BIKE, even a BMW R1200 RT (like the one in my garage) is going to be totally calm with a quartering or 90 degree side wind. Here's a few pics of the Triumph Touring screen with the MRA X-creen, sorry for the night pics, I'm leaving early tomorrow morning to take my bike to MCC in Villa Park, IL to add the Cruise Control and take care of the recall campaigns on the 120. JSYK, I have a Parabellum Scout Fairing on order to see if I can improve on what I have. 8 out of 10 is good, but I'm looking for #9 or #10!
Yes, that's it. I wish I could upload pictures but I'm struggling on how to do it from my iPad. For me this screen is temporary. I'm waiting to see if anyone will offer a quick release tall retro screen. I like the screen for long rides or on cold days. Although when I just want to have some fun I like the screen off. I don't like the looks of this screen but I settled. When I'm on the highway doing 80 mph it works wonderfully.
My Parabellum windscreen arrived today.
I posted a pic of it held over the Dart Marlin flyscreen for comparison. Not only is the Parabellum windscreen about four times the area, but it is more upright (with out the front to back curve).
I plan to mount the windscreen tomorrow.
I installed the windscreen today. If it does not rain tomorrow; I will test it out.
EDIT (4/18/2017):
I did test the windscreen today on a short ride. I like it. It is the 22" model.
I took the bike up to 80 mph and found that the windscreen moved the air around me. No buffeting of my helmet, arms or torso. I find that I am riding in a more relaxed posture.
My son in on the bike (in two pics) to illustrate how a rider can see over the screen, and how it looks.
One pic is from the rider's perspective looking forward.
I have no experience with either of the screens you have linked. From looking at the pictures in the links, it seems to me the quick release at 16.1 inches above the top of the head lamp is significantly shorter than the long haul screen. Therefore, I would surmise that the quick release screen would move less wind from the rider's body and head compared to the long haul screen. The quick release feature might be what you prefer, rather than riding in quiet air.
I have the Parabellum sport touring windscreen on my T-120. The screen is 22 inches above the head lamp and 23 inches measuring the curve just under the upper mounting points. It moves air so that I ride in quiet air (tested to 85 mph).
That Parabellum Sports Tourer is great value and looks good too. I have a 20" Parabellum Scout setup for my T120 which I rode around with for a while and will reinstall for long trips.
I do notice that I can wear an open-face helmet and listen to my music at highway speeds up to about 100kph but if wear my full-face with top vents there is a lot of noise and either way the bike sounds entirely different. It can also get a bit noisy in a crosswind, or maybe it's just more noticeable. It really does reduce fatigue and is not really QD but could be attached or detached fairly quickly once you've done it a few times.
I'm about 5'11" and just wish I'd got the highest screen possible as it's pretty simple to cut them down if you have to. Even so, a replacement is fairly well priced so I'll eventually get one over.
Meanwhile I have the Dart flyscreen that works remarkably well for relieving chest buffet.
