T120 crankcases joint

Hello,
I need a little help from you. I’m beginning a total restoration and processing of my T120 unit ’65 in a classic café bike. I never have liked leaks from crankcases. (sure that someone thinks “then, Why do you have a classic Triumph”). Well I have a doubt, is possible use a thin gasket to joint the cranckcases (about 0,2-0,3 milímeters) or is best utilize a synthetic gasket type “Nural” or “Honda bond”
Thanks in advance and sorry for my language

I used a silver coloured RTV instant gasket on my T140v crankcases, many years ago. It worked great! I think Honda-bond is the same type of thing.

I used Yamabond on my '68' T120rebuild. No leaks so far.

3M RTV, Yamabond, whatever.

The thing is, you have to use a fairly thinn smear, and apply it in such a manner that when you torque up the case studs, the "squeeze" will not work it's way INSIDE the crankcase.

If some stray sealant finds it's way into the oil passages, especially in the connecting rods, it could all be over in a hurry.

Tears in the night, and all that.

Hmmm...don't know if it would work on bikes, but "back in the day" when we rebuilt aircraft engines (split case Lycomings & Continentals) we used a piece of silk thread with some Loctite on the case faces. Rarely had any leaks from the case.

+1 on the "make sure the excess doesn't get into the oiled areas" as well....engine failure due to oil flow problems is expensive.

Thanks, I think that i will be use instat gasket.
Until now, in all my motors, always I have use paper oil o syntethic paper to joint the crankcases.
I don't like much de instant gasket substitute, but always there is a first time

Hi madsundaysurviv,

That's a nice blog you have there. I don't speak Spanish but Google Translate does the trick.

Regards,
Henry

Hi,Derswede. Believe it or not, in the official factory manual for a '72 MV Sport, a length of " woollen yarn " is the prefered gasket material! sounds rather quaint!

Tanks Henryanthony, now I'm begining, I have a lot of material in my home to post it, but I haven't got time for it. I want post espcially about things of fifties and sixties Triumphs, but about other classic bikes too. In Spain is difficult talk about Triumph, Bsa and other brits. Is more easy see in a show a Gilera Quattro, Moto guzzi 350gp or MV 500 gp that a standard TR5 or T100. In few I want put a traductor in the blog.
