whats that bolt?

Well here I go showing my newby ignorance..71 Bonneville, just reviewing tools and supplies needed before digging in to a mild rebuild
the cylinder bolt nuts are obviously 12 point ..but what ..is this the infamous whitworth ?..if so how are they sized and ignoring the preservation bit, why not replace with proper tensile hex nuts ? Know a good source for wrenches and sockets to handle ? thanks for any info..

I believe a 1/2" 12-point box end will work if you grind down the outer edge to clear the gap.

I have, on a bike of my own, used standard 6-sided nuts on the cylinders.

Yep, 1/2 inch 12-point ground down. I believe snap-on has some wrenches that are for tight fits such as this, but I can't remember the number, and It is cheaper to buy a china wrench and grind it down. Probably cost you around three bucks.

you can't just rplace the whitworth nuts with Af as the thread will be wrong, so you'd need to remove the whole toip end to do the studs. That might mean rboring the block.

I'm sure that tyhere are guys in the states who can provide cheap whitworth tools.

Here, autojumbles (swapmeets) are full of stands selling tools for older bikes

You can replace the 12-point BSF nuts with 6-point BSF nuts.

I ran over to Sears, picked up a $2 1/2" box end. So I wouldn't
be grinding on any of my good wrenches.

The 12 point nuts are readily availible. Just a matter of personal
taste, I suppose.

Outstanding!
I've never found anything but less than useless junk at any of those things.
