removing l/h main bearing race

I searched for this cause I know it's been dealt with but couldn't find it so I'll repost with my version: Today, I removed two of the l/h bearing races that are always a challenge to get out because of their design. Last night I knew I was going to be doing this today so I put a small drinking water bottle in the freezer. The bottom of it is just about the size of the bearing race. Today, I heated the case (with a drip pan under it) in the oven to 215F for 15 or 20 min. to make sure it was hot. When I removed it I grabbed the water bottle from the freezer and headed for the work bench. I pushed the bottom of the bottle in the race. After a few seconds I twisted it trying to get it further into the race. The race started rotating with the bottle. I turned the case over and the race fell out. I didn't leave the second case in the heat as long and it didn't fall out but came out with the first slam on the work bench. It may not have been up to temp. Sure was easy.

I've never had to resort to such highly technical extremes as freezing a bottle of water!

I guess it doesn't start getting 'high tech' unless you start trying to actually quantify the difference in the coeficient of expansion in dissimilar metals as comapred to ambient conditions....
When I took the race out of my 68, I used a torch to heat the case. It was hot enough that a drop of saliva on the finger tip evaporated quickly but no amount of banging on the workbench budged the race. I had to resort to more drastic and time consuming measures. This method worked quickly and easily for me on these two but who knows if the next one will cooperate. I quarantee I'll try this first.

Yeh, mine fell right out after a minute with the propane.
But some of them are quite anti-social! You could try cutting
slots inside the race with a Dremel so your punch or chisel
has something to bite

I cut grooves in the first one I did on my 68 because heat alone wasn't doing it. The icy bottle seems to work a lot easier.
