Fitting Boyer ignition to my T120R (Video)

The original Lucas Rita had been giving me problems at low rpm
It had been trouble free for 37 years so owed my nothing
I replaced it with the Boyer mk3, and took a vid

Did you ever make a part 2 of this video. We talked about pinging on my 76 T140 about a week ago.I am able to get a strobe light this week.I just need some help on how to strobe time my bike. The pillar bolts were not as snug as they should be and I think the stator plate might have moved.

I like your effort on the part of Triumph owners, but can I be so bold as to make a suggestion. The Boyer uses the plastic case as a heat sink, and as such needs a certain amount of air flowing across the box. Wrapping it in an inner tube blocks any flow of air and increases the chance the unit will fail.

The 5 amp rating given the Boyer box is directly related to amount of cooling available. Wrapping the box in anything that insulates the plastic box reduces the current capacity of the unit. While this is not always a problem using stock 12 volt coils which have a low current draw, it becomes critical when you start using aftermarket coils which can easily reach or exceed the box's 5 amp capacity.

Hi johntioc great, note worthy comment!
keep up the boldness and comment away!

My idea with the tube was to limit vibrations to the unit.
Over here a very hot day is maybe 28c and we don't get many of them
normally 15-20 odd for summer.

The ends of the tube I have left open, the coils I use are two 6v
upto now I have had no problems.
Out of curiosity, my mate has a probe type thermometer
I might just borrow it! poke it in! and go for a blast to see what temp it gets upto.
Would you know offhand what the working temp of the unit is?

Hi giacomo67
Yes I did the strobing one "eventually" here you go

You never ran a MKIII or MKIV with a low resistance coil near 3 ohms, and wrapped it in foam. We run them for several hours unwrapped while testing them and they certainly get hot to the touch.

The Micro-Power does not draw any where near the current as the Analog box does. Thus it will not get as warm as the analog unit.
