Primary chain case plugs. (VIDEO)

Pointing out the level plugs on the primary side.

When the chain case has been drained you must top it up with approximately 1/4 of a pint, of engine oil.
My bike is a 1972 650cc T120R Triumph Bonneville, 4speed right foot change.

Hi Plewsy,is it common for oil to leak from the chain adjustment plug?

it only leaks after a run and stops when the bike is cold!

The drips are always on the bottom of the adjustment plug and a bit worse when its on the side stand, cant see where else its coming from!

Cheers.Den

Hi trayden :-)
Its pretty common! the worst one for leaking on mine is the level plug.
I seal it with a few wraps of PTFE (thread tape) screw it in as tight as I dare
then I cover the head of bolt and surrounding case with a good gloop of silicon to stick it there.
Then I remove the case to drain oil and fill by measuring.

For the adjustment plug if the threads are not too damaged again a few wraps of PTFE around the plug also anneal the copper washer so it is super soft, or replace copper washer with a fibre one.

Don't take for granted this is where its leaking from though, as the plugs are about the lowest point on the case,
this is where oil seems to appear.

Thanks! It already has a fiber washer but i will try some PTFE!

Not sure myself where its coming from but doesn't leak when the bike is cold only hot!

I can leave standing for a week with no oil leak,as soon as i run it, it leaks!

Cheers,Den

If it only leaks after being ridden, my guess is it's coming from the sprocket cover seal and running down the backside of the primary case.

Jimmy's got it as to the point of leakage, Plewsy's got it that it's the low spot on the engine (especially when the bike is sitting on the side stand).
