You are spot on! with valves that are too tight! not good,
as it will cause valve and seat burning and a drop in compression,
and will make starting hard, when engine is hot.
I have always used the 2 & 4 thou settings given by Mr Triumph

Using the 4 & 6 thou settings maybe a little noisier but the increased service interval makes it worth while.
On well used machines the wear on the rocker arms and valve tops can make the use of feeler gauges almost impossible
as the feelers can bridge the dents in rocker arms giving a false reading,

in this case setting tappets (backlash) by FEEL is probably the most accurate way.
