Setting valve tappets (VIDEO)

Hi all,
when doing stuff to my bike I have started to get my camera out, It makes doing the job twice as long to do, but hey!what the hell. The story behind them is me trying to cure a slight misfire at around 4000rpm, she has always run a bit rich and never liked ticking over, or doing 30mph.
So I started at the carbs (wrong) It seems to have turned out to be the OE Lucas Rita!
Ah! well its not the first time I have barked up the wrong tree, and sure it won't be the last.
Anyway here's me setting my tappets on my 1972 650cc T120R.
I use the settings 2thou" for inlets and 4thou" for the exhausts set when cold.

Ah another fine video you got there. Still do not hear the
accent though.

GrandPaul,

Hey is there any way to get all of these video files into a
special section where people can reference them. It would
be of great help to those people who have not done these
operations before. A picture and in this case a video is much
better than one of us trying to discribe how it is done.

Plewsy,
It always seemed to me that 2 and 4 thou clearances was too tight, so I never set my lash to that, and have been using 4 and 6 thou. What are your views on rather tight clearance spec? It's not good to run valves too tight.

Hi 68TR6R,
You are spot on! with valves that are too tight! not good,
as it will cause valve and seat burning and a drop in compression,
and will make starting hard, when engine is hot.
I have always used the 2 & 4 thou settings given by Mr Triumph
Using the 4 & 6 thou settings maybe a little noisier but the increased service interval makes it worth while.
On well used machines the wear on the rocker arms and valve tops can make the use of feeler gauges almost impossible
as the feelers can bridge the dents in rocker arms giving a false reading,
in this case setting tappets (backlash) by FEEL is probably the most accurate way.

Valve lash set too loose will beat up your adjusters and worse, the valve stem tips. You'll find the damage quickly, because the adjustment will loosen up even more quickly from the beating and banging.

Hi jrn and welcome to TR,
I am glad you found it helpful.
There is another way as well, If you get one inlet valve down you can set the other, and then the same on exhaust s 1 down set the other.
