Cleaning the filthy beast

What products do yous recommend for doing everything from de-gunking the engine to scrubbing pitting and rust on chrome to brightening up engine and cooling fins and on and on... I've got original parts for nearly everything but most are in pretty poor condition (at least appearance-wise). ex. - two sets of Smith's gauges but the chrome rims are pitted, the glass is murky and buckets and brackets have some rust, pitting etc. I have the original headlamp but the rim is dull and the bucket rather corroded.

I'm not interested in "polishing" anything... just want a good, clean, prepped surface before I begin working on everything.

Polishing will come MUCH later....

From a sailor's perspective, there is a product called Flitz that works exceptionally well on stainless and chrome. It is available in marine supply stores.
There is also a 2 part cleaner/wax called Collinite's #850.

What do you guys use on the rims and tires? Is there any thing to protect the seat? Armor All comes to mind but that would make for some interesting riding.

Wierd. Sometimes I get logged out and when I return to the forum, I see all the ads that appear between the posts.

Well, in THIS thread, at THIS moment, were two ads for cleaning and polishing products.

What are the odds?

Simple Green has an aluminum cleaning formula that I use to clean any oil weeping on the lower cases and underneath, supposedly better for the alum than the original Simple Green..wont stain the metal. It does work well,I spray on and hit it with a pressure washer really quickly.

cleaning products

Hi: I bought a product called Autosol because I read a lot of good things about it. Has anyone used it or know any reason why it should not be used ? John A.

I find it brilliant for cleaning and polishing alloy. Used with scotchbrite (those little scouring pads normally green the missus uses to clean the pots) you can get the alloy mirror clean although it takes time and elbow grease.
