Finding the '82/83 parts to do a conversion is the hard part, they are RARE and expensive.

I believe there is a belt-drive conversion kit, but I keep misplacing the link and it may or may not have been prototype only.

Unhappy starter

GP....case you wonder why i keep going back and forth is, i have now found since newfoot surgery, that my knee has changed again, remember i had knee operation last summer.I had foot surgery in february because i was , walking poorly.
So ...the foot doctor puts me in orthodics, this STRAITENS UP MY LEGS, therefore pulling my knee tendons back to normal ,therefore, tilting my knee and injuring it again.I may have to get it replaced now.so back and forth i go from k/s to elcetric start.
I wil land on the right idea pretty soon.

How about putting the bike on a center stand, standing beside it, and kick-starting it with your left foot? I don't know your exact circumstance and this might not be feasible, but I just thought I'd mention it. Either way, sorry to hear about your issues - I think that the R&D department for the human body rushed the knee design at the last minute.

Additionally, I know that a Triumph was modified in the 60s for Ann Margret utilizing a Honda starter. I think with some creative cutting and modifying, one could be added to the front back side of the timing chest. I'm not saying it would be easy ...

Well,

I start mine with the left foot on the side stand. Got a right
hip that is not in the best of shape.

In the end though, look on the UK ebay site for the parts for
the electric start. Sometimes, parts do turn up, but they
are expensive. Also I think I remember something about one of
the gears has to be changed out in the timing chest as they
would grind down to nothing.

I understand your problem. I have twice wrecked my right knee in car crashes. In two different ways. I have a BMW atm as it has an electric start. Sadly it also has a Left hand gearshift. Sometime this year I hope to change back to an old Triumph, or a New Enfield. Either can easily be converted to RH gearshift for me, and the Enfield has a reasonably efficient starter as well as the kickstart. The Triumph electric foot is not the best, it can easily break in a big way, especially if it backfires when starting. Leaving your timing gears in bit of a mess.

Maybe I am mad, but would it be possible to work the kickstart with an air ram ?? hook it on to start, then 'park' is when running? a small electric tyre inflator could recharge a small cylinder. I used to work for a company that made air rams for all sorts of applications. now defunct unfortunately ( Maxam )

Unhappy e starter

yes.unfortunatley i can start the bike with my left foot, but at the rate i'm going.........i will be an invalid , if not more careful.i will keep watch on ebay , something might pop up.for electric start.

i have a new hip pooky...............on the right naturally.

AS far as an air -ram, .i guess maybe somebody could come up with that idea.not me. i've built so many hot rods in my life i am finally gettin burned out.

If i keep it advertised.somewhere along the line i might get a body, that wants to trade me a newer one for an older one that don't lose its value, right????

If was restoring another triumph, i would look at a newer model electric start.

I didn't think deep enuff before i started rebuilding.

The belt-driven primary setup uses a ring gear on the backside of the clutch plate, with the starter behind the cylinders, poking into the backside of the primary case.

Cheaper than the OEM triumph stuff, and can't destroy your timing side setup (or primary).
